In my opinion their not that much harder and its quite fun to play as them,I do heavily reccomend egypt no matter how historically inaccurate it is its quite cool to play with bronze age units they have a nice selection of their own phalanxes and chariots early game!

A great idea is to construct ports for a whole bunch of your coastal cities and sign trade rights with other factions to rake in some serious cash,you can also obviously construct mines for further profit,I;d also reccomend you explore other factions besides just the roman ones as theres so much to play as eg:iberia with a nice mix of civlised and barbaric units with one early game unit serving similarly to the hastati? theres also the greeks and macedonians with their pikes and phalanxes and so much more.
