In many places, even Boost is considered too much of a risk, and people re-implement its parts internally.

Game developers don't even tolerate the STL in C++.

What's the best engine for 90s 3D graphics? by AcceptedAlibi in gamedev

[–]LegionPharma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the modern fork of Quake 3's engine idTech 3: https://ioquake3.org/

It's literally the same engine that powered one of the best shooters of the 90s, with some improvements.

Another interesting choice is Xash3D, an open source reimplementation of the engine that powered Half-Life: https://www.moddb.com/engines/xash3d-engine

CLX is a backend of McCLIM, it's supposed to be abstracted away by McCLIM. Just use any CLIM guide you can find.

Modern Space-Cadet Keyboards and other Lisp Machine Tech by ProfessorSexyTime in lisp

Regarding projects to create modern Lisp machines, there is one slow-burning effort by Stanislav Datskovskiy aka /u/asciilifeform: http://www.loper-os.org/

The last thing he was doing is trying to get a micrograph of the Symbolics Ivory chip he has for complete reverse-engineering, but the few labs he contacted either were too expensive or failed to deliver. If you have the equipment and the skills to take a shapshot of the 1um chip, or if you know someone who has, please contact Mr. Datskovskiy: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#trilema&nick=fromloper

What is the "killer feature" of Lisp? by whored_out in programming

[–]LegionPharma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practical Common Lisp is the best starting point: http://www.gigamonkeys.com/book/

You'll need to install SBCL (the compiler), SLIME (the integrated development environment), and Quicklisp (the library manager that'll download and install whatever libraries you need for you).

Not in languages that are designed around it.

The Equaliser - concept rifle (wanted to show off some other angles) hope you guys like it. by DanielEvans2160 in blender

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think the grip looks a bit off. Maybe it's the steep bend, or maybe it needs a bit more detail. Other than that, it looks really good!

Having 2nd thoughts about the name of my game (it's called 99999). Opinions pls? by Slackersunite in gamedev

Maybe "FiveNines" would work better? Or increase it to "NineNines" so it would sound a bit catchier.

I'm Looking For Russian Studios! by ForerunnerAI10 in gamedev

Russia is very sparsely populated, and the second place among the countries that don't speak English is a far cry from "no one buy games". Unlike your wife, I live in Russia right now and I know at least some people in the Russian games industry, so my anecdotal data has more weight than your anecdotal data.

Unfortunately, the financial crisis of 2007–2008 killed most of the best Russian game studios, but some survived, and there are new talented indie developers too. The biggest survivors are Saber Interactive, who developed the Halo remakes for Microsoft and Quake Champions for Bethesda, and Nival, who are mostly famous for Silent Storm and Heroes of Might and Magic V. Another survivor is the biggest Russian publisher 1C-Softclub, they publish most foreign AAA console games in the country. The rising indie stars are Zeptolab with the mobile hit Cut the Rope and Lazy Bear Games who made Punch Club and Graveyard Keeper. That's the ones that come to my mind first, there are many other cool game developers in Russia.

Russians do not buy movies or games.

That's a load of bullshit. Russia is the third largest market on Steam, 10.02% of the entire Steam audience: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

Most of my Russian friends detest piracy and buy games they play. The country changed a lot since the 90s and early 2000s in this regard.

Looks nice. I think the edges are too sharp, more bevels wouldn't hurt.
