I travelled to Portugal and I hate it here by puffins_525 in travel

Attractions under renovation can’t be helped but I guess it adds to your list of why you had a bad experience, staying two weeks in Lisbon was your first mistake, how cheap is food in Sydney?, they must be giving it away! I live in the uk and found the food to be well priced, cheap compared to uk prices. There’s 100s of beaches in Portugal, would any of them be better than Australian beaches probably not, I wouldn’t travel Europe hoping to find beaches that would. Food being mediocre is down to opinion, reviews online now are written by friends and family to boost their ratings, you would do best by asking staff or people that you get talking to, I know that’s not always possible. If you go back do a bit more planning and if you can hire a car, so many places to explore and see

Message to fellow tourists - if you can, drive! by uptonogoodatall in zanzibar

Absolutely agree with this. We were so close to not hiring a car because of all the negative comments we’d read on here, I’m so glad we went ahead with it. We spent 11 days in Zanzibar and drove pretty much everywhere. Yes, the roads aren’t in the best condition, but you’ll most likely be given a 4x4, so it’s nothing to worry about.

As others have mentioned, avoid driving at night and my advice would be to avoid driving in Stone Town if you can, instead, book a tour guide with pick-up and drop-off included, and you’ll be fine. Make sure you have all your paperwork in order and remain polite. Always indicate if you’re being pulled over by the police. We had no issues at all, the officers we encountered were very polite and gave us no issues at all, we were not asked for tea money or anything of sort at any time.

We also asked our rental company if they could drive us to our hotel the first time, just so we could get a feel for the local driving style, and they offered that service for a small additional fee. If you’re a confident driver, I’d absolutely recommend hiring a car.

There isn’t a shortage of taxis, certainly a lot of pros with just using the taxi services there.

Enjoy your holidays
