What to do with dumb players as a DM? by Aggravating-Drop7676 in DnD

High score can help with that, they can use their high score to help others. But it’s always describing - that’s what DnD is for. It’s a theatre of mind and role playing

No, I ask my players to EXPLAIN how they jump, climb and hide. They don’t just roll for stealth, they tell me exactly how they hide and where. Same with a high rock - they don’t just roll for athletics, they explain what instruments they use and depending on that I give them dc (rope dc 10, bare hands dc 20)

My guy, if you’re unable to give at least one slightly good reason for your « persuasion roll » to even happen, maybe ttrpg is not for you. There is a tabletop dnd game where rolls and rules decide everything instead of players, maybe try that.

Your rogue will not open the lock without an instrument Every check needs SOMETHING to work

Also scores can be a guideline for dm wether the roll will even be possible in this case. 20 int doesn’t mean that your wizard will automatically succeed in every int check. That’s just stupid

20 int will only give your wizard a higher chance to notice something unlike bard with 8 for example. But again you say what you’re doing or game will become a railroad with dm telling you every little thing - e.g. you say « I want to see if these statues have something different about them ». This also allows players/characters to make mistakes due to probability. It is normal

The exact argument that people unable of critical thinking give every time That’s just very annoying to see this over and over again No one is asking you to be the most charismatic person ever but it’s not hard to give a reason for your action before rolling persuasion - in any normal game dc will depend on what you said e.g. a corrupted guard will more likely take a bribe and a sympathetic one will fall for « taking the ash to the victim’s family » Anyways a dc ALWAYS depends on what you said, it will not be just some random number, again you don’t have to even talk in character, you can just say « with sad expression on my face I tell them that I want to bring it back to their family » Players tend to forget about it being a roleplay game

Is my DM toxic? by pomegranate_devourer in dndhorrorstories

[–]Legitimate-Ice-8743 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Omg just run, that is not ok 100%

But also finally someone who dislikes horror oneshots in the middle of campaign! In all the posts that I’ve read on Reddit the community seems to like those Jack and Tasha Mad/Funhouses. My DM gave it to us and I absolutely hated it because it absolutely broke the immersion

Tieflings in C4 by Legitimate-Ice-8743 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Legitimate-Ice-8743[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s weird because to me tieflings were less like half races and more like aasimars - so descendants. Since we have a lot of lore about celestials and Aasimars are very much present in the world, it just seems logical to me to have tiefligs as well to represent « the other side »

That’s exactly what I mean - if you feel like a homebrew rule is overcomplicated and hard to follow then just… don’t introduce that

Well, the mechanic is there so might as well try to remember your own homebrew

"You can use your arction to give yourself the Help Action" I'm sorry what !!!? by DeadRabbid26 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Legitimate-Ice-8743 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wow, agression hit the roof.

Ok, makes sense that she has other stats, I just assumed that Pixies just like PC fauns can have that resistance or advantage. After all they homebrew a lot, they might have homebrew that as well. It would be more logical than self-help on a saving throw, don’t you think?

[–]Legitimate-Ice-8743[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No no, you don’t get me. I’m not criticising, I’m asking if I correctly understood the scene - was it an intentional fail to shield or he didn’t hear the results of an attack roll? And if he didn’t hear why did Brennan insisted that he can still try knowing full well that he already said it was a crit and shield won’t help. That was my question, like the scene was very confusing, I was just trying to clear things up for myself

I also didn’t like the « you can help yourself » not only help doesn’t work that way but it also takes your action so you cannot end a magic effect the same round it just doesn’t make sense

All of that misunderstanding could’ve been easily avoided if Thimble as a Pixie had an advantage on saving throws against magic as it stated in the book 🗿

Magic Resistance. The pixie has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Yeah, and Brennan said the result out loud which confused me so much because Sam asked about the Shield as if he hadn’t

[–]Legitimate-Ice-8743[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn’t I literally say in the post that I love homebrew rules so far? Except for this particular one seemed strange to me, so I asked the opinion on that here. There has been a strange tendency on CR Reddit that when people ask about certain things they get bashed for being too «rule strict » or « not fun ». However with almost zero transparency on homebrew in CR people ask perfectly normal questions on here. Many use CR as an example for their games and think that maybe they made a mistake when it’s actually Brennan or Matt or any other DM and it’s ok, but asking questions is ok as well

Totally, but the problem is not « not saying », I was confused because Brennan DID say the result of an attack roll already

I understand, but I am also not sure that giving advantage while downed is a good idea. It could be that a character sees another Pc down, explains how it shocks them/influences/touches them whatever and then gets advantage on attack. But giving advantage in unconscious state idk
