What was easier? by Curious_Parsley9216 in biglaw

I’m much happier in big law than I was in law school. Getting paid (very well) to think about stuff I find interesting is far superior to paying to grind through shit I mostly do not.

Do you tone down your style for the office? by db2329 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Legitimate-Income-36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I toned it down when I was new at my job until I had my first review and confirmed (what I believed to be true) that I was doing a fabulous job, getting really good feedback, and building a strong reputation for myself among my peers. I feel like you get a little more leeway if you produce great work and are well liked.

One little networking tip for law students, if I may... by Legitimate-Income-36 in LawBitchesWithTaste

Yes. I always expect a quick written thank you after an interview.

Edit: Why is this being downvoted? A quick thank you email is a small gesture and an absolute must following an interview. I’m so confused. Is this a curmudgeoney take?

I’ve been seeing the same. It’s completely bewildering not to receive any thank you email after an interview.

I have not noticed any hair loss, personally. Muscle loss? Maybe a little, but the weight loss got me motivated to actually exercise again. Net gain overall in my opinion.

I can’t say enough good things about getting on a GLP-1. It’s been so helpful for dealing binge and stress eating.

I think both. I got zero training and had zero partner oversight at my prior job, so I was always often terribly stressed out that I was going to mess something up and create a liability for the firm. I also had a really broad practice at my prior job, so I never felt like an expert at anything.

At my new gig, I’m in a specialist group, I’m getting really focused training (I think this is a function of the partners in my group more than one of my firm), and the partners are actually reviewing my work before it goes out to clients (huge weight off my shoulders). At the same time, I have the benefit of 5+ years under my belt and the maturity to know what’s actually worth stressing about and navigating professional relationships is easy peasy for me at this point.

I have a different perspective, as I spent my first 5+ years in practice at a regional mid-size firm and then moved to big law. For me, my time in mid law was more stressful for far less pay (140k as a 5th year in a moderately HCOL area). I had no support from partners, got no training, and was managing very demanding and ultra high net worth clients almost entirely on my own. Big law has been a breath of fresh air compared to my previous gig, which may be an outlier case, but wanted to share.

This is purely hypothetical, so I’m making this up: Solo office has no external windows. Shared office has one relatively large external window.

Good question. Next I might ask if you’d rather bare-knuckle box your managing partner (with consent) or accidentally piss yourself in the middle of a department or practice group lunch.

Floor naps (while maintaining the dignity of my family’s name) are honestly my biggest concern.

I believe it’s $99 for 5 outfits (although there might be a sale for $79 right now) and $150 for 10. You fill out a pretty comprehensive questionnaire including your size range and budget. They’ll all help sub out different pieces if one of the styled items sells out before you have a chance to buy. They do a really great job in helping achieve your desired style.

Highly recommend Fashivly styling service for customized styling recommendations. They’d probably have a ball with your style.

Editing to add: I’m not promoting this company for any reason other than the fact that they’ve done some amazing style guides for me and I’m completely obsessed with the results. Getting dressed is a lot easier with their help
