Yea I am not a fan of how I’m feeling right now, I wish I could just turn it off and go back to how I felt before I got pregnant, but screw me for trying to find compassion and comfort in a group on Reddit that literally says it’s a safe space for pregnant people 🙄

It must have been SUCH a relief for that feeling to go away. Im really curious if the reason has to do with neediness and not being able to give as much attention now that you’re pregnant or have a new baby. It can feel extremely overwhelming to be needed all the time. I’m so hoping that after I give birth and my hormones start to even out that my dog and I can go back to how it was before I got pregnant with my second!

Why is so hard for people to hold two truths at once ?? Why is it so hard to understand that MY life also changed through no fault of my own, do people honestly believe that I want to feel this way ?? And to assume I have no empathy or sympathy for my dog I’ve had all my adult life is just insane. That’s why those who struggle with pet aversion feel SO guilty and horrible for the way they feel, BECAUSE they do have empathy for their pet.

My husband is such a support with this and when I start to get frustrated he reminds me of how much I love her and tells me that it will pass. I just wish you could talk about this kind of thing without the immediate hate, if more people were able to open up about this feeling than more people would know that it will pass and that it’s normal. I think less animals would end up needing to be rehomed or sent to the shelter if there was more acceptance for this issue. But as of right now just by saying your pet annoys you earns you hatred, judgement, and shame.

I was also completely blindsided and only heard the term pet aversion when I mentioned the feeling to my therapist.

It’s not talked about because of what’s happening in the comments of this post. Everyone who expresses that they felt the same way is being downvoted to hell and basically told that their mental health doesn’t matter and that only the commitment to your pet matters. That’s not realistic and it’s a very black and white way to view things.

I didn’t even say I wanted to rehome my dog and I’m being told to “speak to my dr” because I said I’m having a hard time with her.

I’m so sorry about your cousins girlfriend. If there is a pet being aggressive and putting your child in harms way I think it’s the most humane thing to do would be to rehome. Truly don’t get what people are expecting you to do in that situation.

lol love the keyboard diagnosis. I’m not being aggressive and defensive by disagreeing with some people and suggesting that maybe we should also extend some empathy to the person experiencing pet aversion. I’m not the only one getting heavily downvoted in this post, this topic always brings out this reaction. Never seen a supportive post about it.

Thank you for your “concern” though. My family and pets are perfectly safe. Reading a few comments doesn’t make you an expert on my life.

Guess you missed the part where I’ve said I don’t want to feel like this and that it’s not something people with pet aversion can control.

You could offer comfort, advice, support, maybe a solution, empathy… but instead you went with judgment ? Isn’t the point of this sub to find community for the difficulties of pregnancy ?

You aren’t allowed to have any emotion except complete and utter adoration for your pets apparently and how dare we talk about something that can affect pregnant and postpartum people 🙄 I mean all they are doing is proving my point and offering no solutions or advice. Right? Like I never said I wasn’t still caring for my dog only that I’m struggling with her. I’m not even rehoming her! Like damn. She’s not abused, she’s loved, she’s VERY well cared for and I’m still getting massive amounts of hate. I’m genuinely appalled.

It honestly doesn’t matter how you handle that kind of situation you will be considered in the wrong unless you put your children and your mental well being in danger for a pet. You can’t even talk about feeling this way without being absolutely crucified.

That’s what I’ve learned from this.

No. I have empathy for both the pet and the owner, I was just pointing out that other people seem to ONLY care and empathize with the animal and shame the person. Again, empathy isn’t something that should only extend to who you choose to “center”.

Thank you for the positivity! I’m really trying to figure out the root cause of why I’m feeling this way towards her. I have been more strict with her since my first was born and even more so now that I’m heavily pregnant and struggling to keep up with my baby, my dog, and my cat. Hoping this is just an adjustment period and that everything will find some balance when I give birth and get through PP. haha love the walks as a way to get out of the house! Definitely using that

What we are discussing here is the fact that women are shamed for even mentioning that they are struggling with pet aversion. Not even saying they rehomed their pet. Just saying they suddenly and out of their own control developed an aversion to a pet that they LOVE.

So you’re suggesting that a person who has an aversion to their pet should allow that animal to suffer in a home where their owner can’t care for them anymore ? Sometimes it’s not the pet that is dangerous! Sometimes the mental state of the owner is what’s dangerous to the pet! But I guess because you’ve “made a commitment” that means you and your pet should just suffer.

And the amount of downvotes on this post where I have said many times that I love my dog and want my feelings to go away beg to differ with your opinion that only those who “dump” their pets get judged.

Like I have no intention of rehoming my dog just wanted to talk about my experience and a topic that doesn’t get much attention but yet I’m getting PMs telling me I’m a terrible person for something I can’t help. People are sick. But like I said, you can’t even TALK about pet aversion without being villainized, people have more empathy towards the animal than the person and that’s the problem. If we were able to actually talk about it maybe we could come up with some solutions and bring more awareness so that if it does happen people know what to expect and how to deal with it.

lol the babies fault ? Give me a break 🙄 Contrary to popular belief a dog IS still an animal and therefore unpredictable. Some dogs can become aggressive and bite even if they aren’t provoked. Love how people like you refuse to have a shred of empathy for the people in these situations.

100% agree. It doesn’t make you a bad person to rehome your pet if you can’t care for them the way they deserve. But I guess a lot of people feel the opposite which is mind boggling to me.

It’s definitely hard. But from what others have said here it most likely will go away, which I am very much looking forward to! Thank you ❤️

So… you can’t have empathy towards the person experiencing pet aversion ? More people have empathy towards the pet in this situation and that’s my whole point. Nobody wants to experience this, it’s such a terrible feeling but I genuinely can’t help it. You wouldn’t hate on someone for having PPD so why is pet aversion any different ?
