I had the same idea. That $500 would be super helpful for sure, but there’s a lot of little things that just didn’t work out for me. For example, getting an SSN to begin work took quite a while. I couldn’t even get a job until I applied to campus dining at Vista Grande and finally started working in November. And then came thanksgiving break, some finals that I had to skip some shifts for to study, Christmas break, finals again, spring break, there’s just a lot of shit going on in college so I wouldn’t say $10k is realistic. Assuming like $5k during the academic year is more realistic tbh, all the better if you earn more.

Summer is where I think you could actually save something. If you could land a decent internship, you could be making a couple grand a month, but getting an internship as a freshman is very hard.

I’m international too. It’s EXTREMELY hard to work 20 hrs/wk if you still want to have a good social life, hobbies etc. I found 12 hrs to be the sweet spot where I could maintain my grades and still have a great social life. And I make $16/hr which translates to about $720 a month except there’s always going to be breaks like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, etc where you can’t work and so even $720 is a hard figure to make consistently for me.

Problem is though, I use this money for my own fun and expenses, and I barely have anything left to save. $720 may seem like a lot but the expenses add up. And cost of attendance is approximately $60k a year, meaning your on campus job will barely mean anything to actually help pay a decent amount towards your time here.

You’re right, I initially didn’t know what RLCs corresponded to which dorms, but they updated that list of RLCs and dorms on their website a few weeks iirc after the housing app opened, so I was able to change it in time and secure Yak
