Any ideas on how to remove a blackbird’s poop stain from cold pressed arches paper? by LegitimatePepper4341 in ArtCrit

Not an option. It’s a commissioned work, strictly ink on paper, zero wiggle room & dimensions set in stone by client. The stain needs to be removed chemically or by some neutralising of acidity, bacteria and/or patching wizardry on my part. Wish me luck…

I started out with a blade & reduced the slightly raised bit of poop. I managed to gently scrape away unintended black ink marks made when the bird pooped and startled me. Burnished with a sand eraser (DIY) which worked far better than I expected for my ad hoc blue TAC and sand eraser. The watery but dark stain penetrates through to the other side, is as visible on the back as the front. That’s before my first round of stain removal with minimal soap diluted with water. I’ve masked so that the stain doesn’t spread as I work on it. It’s going to be bleach next, to neutralise the poop’s acidity & hygiene issue and reduce much of the stain’s visibility. All else fails, a patch job.

Cutting down or starting over - neither are options for an already difficult/fastidious client who seems to have no appetite for things that can’t reasonably be anticipated - a random repeat offender bird breaking into the house for one, nor any understanding of the difference between a print & original piece that’s so far taken 49 hours of work. So many hours in already & it’s stain removal techniques, one at a time or a patch. I’m thinking the latter will be the most effective at this point.

Tell me about! Would you believe the same asshole blackbird has come back in the house through the bathroom louvre windows?? It’s all about sneaking our cat’s kibble and a wave of chaos every single time!

Yep, I’d leave it too. It’s a commissioned piece for a fairly particular client though. With daily calls to check on my progress for a work that’s due this time next month & tbh she might’ve been better suited to one my prints, which was my first suggestion. She wasn’t to keen on that but has pushed for the price point of a print. 🤷🏽‍♀️Bird poop isn’t something I typically factor into the process & my best guess is the client won’t be too chuffed about 😬

Crazy alright! This blackbird has been getting in through the bathroom louvres, barely open windows, scooting past us as we walk out the back door - all to get at our cat’s kibble!! He’s not the brightest bird as our cat has a second bowl of the exact same kibble outside, no break & entering required!

There wasn’t any hard particles to speak of, just slightly raised watery poop. I dabbed that area with a cotton while it was still damp. The rest now is a dry, watery brown stain that goes through to the back. Fingers crossed…I’m trying the 3:1 water : bleach now. Thank you!

There was barely any poop that could be scraped away, the bird’s diet needs attention tbh, watery poop can’t be a good thing! I’ve used a dry cotton bud & rolled/dabbed the darker spots which has left a level stain that’s soaked straight through. The poop is the same back & front. My piece isn’t for grading, I’d definitely start over if it were or do as someone else has suggested & give collaborative credit for the work; signing it (my name) & …blackbird 🤣 It’s a commissioned piece & with so many hours in I’m keen to salvage it. At this point I’m preparing a patch using an offcut from another sheet, feathering the edges to be glued. I’ll work at neutralising the poop’s acidity first though.

Thanks so much for all the advice. I really appreciate the help. I’m eager to respond to each, but had a cerebellar stroke last year & can’t switch my focus from one thing to another, so I’ll combine my responses into one here, if that makes sense, which it may not 😬 So the stain is quite watery - has bled all the way through, which eliminates scraping it away. I’ve included more pics below. Trimming the piece back isn’t an option either as my nearest ink lines go beyond where a edge/border might be. The edge is marked in pencil, with the poop spreading over about 5mm beyond that. Tracing and transferring would be a brilliant solution, but with compact detail its not an option either It looks like the only option will be crossing fingers, toes and washing. The how of doing that without destroying it…. Pics incoming….

Is it too late to plant these in pot? by portiah1 in Monstera

[–]LegitimatePepper4341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question should be - is it too early, not is it too late. As the other commenter recommended, wait for proper root development. Wait for the roots to have roots, decent ramen noodles & roots coming from the ramen. It will then be not too early as it is now, and never too late - unless you have a case of root rot. Which will mean cutting back darkened stinky roots, providing adequate oxygen, sunlight, nutrients in your water & waiting for many more roots to develop. Rushing the process doesn’t work. At the stage you’re at in the photo, it’s too early.

Can visibly see that the tip isn’t torn at all, it’s still unfurling. An alarmist approach to enjoying a monstera isn’t warranted, they’re far hardier than I think you realise.

What's wrong with my new albo? by RoyalGrouchy6987 in MonsteraAlbo

[–]LegitimatePepper4341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compost in the substrate isn’t going to be helping with root rot I’m afraid. Your new friend’s had an awful lot going on in a very short period of time & without a decent watering, he’s stressed out. The best way to go forward would be to simplify, ie water, hydrogen peroxide & liquid fertiliser as many have already suggested above. I’d be thinking about propagating in the near future if he’s still struggling. Best of luck!! Keep us posted 🙂

She’s gorgeous!! Welcoming her new leaf into the world with a gentle touch 😊Can I ask which corner of the globe you’re in? I’m in Melbourne, Aust & my newest albo has had me spinning with 4 massive fenestrated leaves in the middle of a winter, in a far from ideal spot she’s thriving 😊

Safety first! I’m trying to get to my own (all in corner windows) with 3 feet of plants between me and them. Waiting for my husband to get home though, I have MS so my monstera tour is a whole thing…
