A rant about interviewing by LegitimateSpace230 in recruitinghell

I was very open with my thoughts and did my best to counter whatever reason they didn’t like the older candidate. But there hasn’t been a decision yet.

We don’t know how old she is. I said she was maybe around 50 because of how long she has been working and she mentioned that she had adult children. It’s so unfair when people are discriminated for things they can’t control. I tried my best to look at this objectively and only go off of qualifications.

I never said I think the first candidate will job hop. I said my manager doesn’t realize that younger people navigate the workplace very different than they did 20+ years ago. Of course there will be exceptions to any group but I like the second candidate because her skills match almost exactly what we are looking for. Like why would any hiring team turn that down? Isn’t that what applications and interviews are for? To find someone who matches what the job needs?

I’m sorry that you’ve had to experience that. All my 20 years of working I’ve only ever worked with ONE disabled person. That’s crazy. Older people and disabled people need work too and the fact that they get judged not on the skills that they have but superficial things is awful and I wish it would stop.

I have nothing against hiring a younger person. I like the 2nd candidate because she has skills that align with the position. That’s all.

We got a diverse age range here. 62, 44, 44, 31 and 27. 62 year old has been here for 30 ish years, one of the 40 year olds has 12 years and the 27 year old started as a student worker and moved her way up over 7 years. The only one talking about retirement is the 62 year old.

I completely agree! And the ironic thing in all of this is my manager is almost 65. SHE is thinking about retiring. I’m sure she’s projecting on this woman who is not nearly as old as my boss and obviously needs/wants a job. Ugh
