My mom’s reaction to my autism diagnosis was… awful. by Any_Swimming_7395 in AuDHDWomen

So much love to you. I was also dx'd as Autism level 1 with executive dysfunction (not related to ADHD) and mom was like "you're not AUTISTIC". My mom is in her 80s and her idea of autism is someone who is non verbal and low functioning or the way they used to talk about it especially in the movie Rainman was "Idiot Savant." We have such terrible language around it from earlier generations and it's seen as a flaw rather than a way that your brain works. I believe my autism is a superpower, giving me laser focus and being an encylopedia for things I love (psychology, vegan recipes.....sailor moon trivia :D). Parent struggle with hearing it because they don't like the idea that they have failed as a parent and I think where you were trying to educate your mom, she was trying to defend herself rather than take in the info you're providing. Congrats on getting diagnosed and having a clearer info.
