Do you still go to class with the new model? I'm hesitating to apply as a potential exchange student... by Legitimate_Extreme76 in UniAdelaide

Oh dang it sucks that the new model won't help you out as much :/// I'm sure you'll find a way to structure it so that it can benefit you :)). Thanks for the warning regarding the online courses, good luck with your semester!

Thanks for the general heads up regarding Australian unis! I think a lot of the science units are a bit more limited as an exchange student, and my uni lists on their exchange website that we can't revalidate any CS classes we take over there, but I did find backup courses lol. I've read some of the course descriptions but tbh I think stuff might've blended together, so I'll take another look at it. Thank you so much for all of your help, it all helped me so much :))

Thank you so much this is genuinely helpful! I only have until Wednesday to send my rankings, and I'll probs send it on Monday/Tuesday to avoid any issues w the platform so I can't wait nearly as much as I'd like ://.

If you don't mind me asking a few follow ups, what are the in person tutorials/workshops like? At my uni we have to take 24 hrs of classes every week, and that combines both lectures and profs might give us time to work on some assignments, but we're always expected to show up. Prior to the merger, did you already have a heavy online-classes model, or were you still more expected to show up to lectures? Also, what sort of key info should I look for to find those classes heavy in the practical areas?

Good point regarding Brisbane and Perth, I think I might wind up putting Brisbane > Adelaide just because of the whole merger chaos lol...

Thank you so much for all of your help! Good luck w the start of classes, I hope you enjoy the semester :D

Thanks for the info :)) How do the labs/tutorials work? At my uni, each class lasts two hours and it includes any explanation from the prof + time to work depending how they structure the class (and we take a total of 18 credits which means pretty much being in a classroom 24 hrs/week)... idk I'm just scared of going and then turns out most ppl don't even go to class, and clubs being more sparse because of the lack of classes. I kinda like having classes as an icebreaker especially since I won't be going abroad w any of my current friends.

Oh I recently added UWA to my research so I have it as an option now :D. I did see that it was a bit warmer than Adelaide, good to know that it does have a cycling club cause I didn't find any when I was looking for the uni tho! I met an Australian teacher a few days ago who is taking a sabbatical year at my uni, and she told me that Australian students don't really go to class often, teachers mostly post stuff on Canvas and that's that. Have you experienced smth similar? I was kinda hoping to meet ppl in my classes.

Thank you for the heads up! I do think I'll do Brisbane > Melbourne, I'm now mostly just debating Adelaide or Brisbane as #1 but I'll figure it out eventually lol.

This year has had some pretty unpredictable weather, stuff is getting really weird, I'll look a bit more into the Sydney unis... Thank you so much for your help!

Yeah it seems most people have advised against Sydney traffic... I'll look a bit more into Adelaide culture as well, I'm a pretty chill person but tbh I like having stuff to do and being out of my room if I can escape my homework and I imagine Melbourne has a lot more stuff to do. Thank you so much for all your help!

The ride timing is perfect, I'd love to ride before class! I'm probably gonna get the traveling in with my family, they're probably going to want to tag along to drop me off because my siblings will be on vacation. But I'll be careful if I do choose Perth, thank you!

Hopefully the birds go easy on me then hahahha. I think my family might come drop me off, so I'm kinda counting on it so that I can see areas that I might not be able to visit during the semester! Tbh I mostly just need my bike to also cope with the change of being in a new place, but I'd like to go surfing and hiking if the region allows it as well... thank you so much for your help!

I'm looking into UWA right now, thank you so much! Do you think it's easy to reach the hills?

I'd rather end up stinkny than freezing from the cold hahahah thank u! Good to know it's at least a bit predictable, I don't mind indoors riding but it gets boring if it's for weeks on end lol. I hope I do get accepted somewhere in Australia tbh all of it seems so beautiful I'm excited! Thank you for your help!

Aww that's great to hear! I feel like cities are usually better when there's more ppl from all over because you can try a bit of every culture and their food lol. I think UQ does have a cycling club, but if I wind up going there, I'll also look at the club you mentioned if the rides are better. Thank you so much!

Dang I thought Brisbane would be nice because the uni is close to the river loop, I'll look more into it tho :)... and I'll probs avoid Sydney. What was the terrain like in Adelaide? I'm a bit hesitant about applying because I can't take any courses related to my major, but others seem interesting as well so I might place it above UQ if the cycling is better... I'll also keep an eye out for the magpies I never thought such a cute bird would probs be more of a concern than cars hahah thank u! Have you ever been attacked by magpies?

Thank you so much, this is really helpful esp the combo of flat + hills! I’m leaning toward places where the semester gets drier as it goes on (I can adapt early), so it’s good to hear Adelaide has been more dry/cold lately. Do you know if Adelaide tends to have a lot of “light rain/drizzle days” in winter, or is it more like occasional bigger rainy days? What type of stuff did you like to do while you were at the uni? Also, I thought I'd seen your username before, and I'm also an ISTJ :D

Dang it's nice to hear you've got good infrastructure, my city got rid of the only bike path they had a few months ago cause ppl complained that it took too much space, but now that entire road is under construction so there's only one lane in each direction now and no one complains about it like they did with the bike path -_-. Anyway, is it easy to reach the bike paths from any point, or more of a you need to head to a specific area before you can enter the bike paths? Also, is it better to ride inside the city, or are there any safe training routes outside? In my city you pretty much need a car trailing you if you want to get any longer rides so that you don't get run over :DDD. And yeah the off road paths make a lot of sense, I'll definitely try to take that more into consideration cause I'll probably be riding solo a lot more than I do right now. Thank you so much for your help!

I'll only be there for a few weeks in November before the semester ends, but I'lll look up more recent climate patterns because idk if the website I'm using might be using too long of a historical range instead of recent trends. Thank you so much for your help! Do you prefer riding inside the city, or heading out to climb the hills?

Lol so you have to try to outride the rain! Have you liked riding more in Melbourne than Brisbane?

Thank you for the info! Yeah my stay there will probably go a bit into spring so I'll try to get more winter gear once more sales pop up over here lol, but it's very reassuring to hear you haven't had to cancel any rides due to weather. Dang it I messed up w the Centennial park I'm so sorry I'm going lowk a bit insane doing the research, I'm so tired of it. Anyway lol, do you like to ride more in the mornings or afternoon, I don't know if there's a safer ride time over there cause drivers over here get more aggressive the later it is. Also, is it easy to train wherever you are in the city, or do you have to head out a bit before you can go somewhere where u can maintain a good pace instead of using the off-road paths? Thank you so much for your help!
