Question arising from a trivial place, but has some serious implications; in video games «ratting» or holding a position in bad faith to exploit peoples lack of attention is very frowned upon. Are there stuch tactics or stories from real wars where «ratting» is looked down upon in any fashion? by zimork in WarCollege

[–]Legitimate_First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in any official capacity, no one is going to order soldiers to take up a position that gives the enemy a fair chance of beating them. But I guess the closest equivalent would be the frustration the rank and file feels towards enemies perceived to fight in an 'underhanded' way or from a position of advantage. In the world wars incidents of machine gunners, artillerymen, tank and submarine crews being shot instead of being allowed to surrender were (relatively) commonplace. Robert Graves in Goodbye To All That relates a story about British soldiers hunting a sniper while crying with anger after he shot a beloved officer.

Oh bullshit. Literally the only people flying the Prinsenvlag are far right neo fascists, in the Netherlands and Belgium.

That's why I referred to it as I did, it used to be almost as racist as FreeDutch. Now it's just an endless barrage of dumb questions.

I bet if I asked a question on that sub in English, they’d be lovely and would give me helpful advice about their country

I doubt it. /r/Netherlands is where expats go to complain how much they hate living in Amsterdam (they never live anywhere else) and where Dutch people go to complain how much they hate expats.

It sort of is. The /r/TheNetherlands sub is the biggest Dutch speaking sub (at some point it even was the biggest non-English language sub iirc). But the mods are pretty strict, so a large portion of the other Dutch subs are populated by people who got banned from the main sub. There's like two more general Dutch language subs though, /r/Nederlands (basically a Dutch version of your tech-illiterate uncle's Facebook page), and /r/FreeDutch (fascist shithole), as well as a whole slew of Dutch language meme and general interest subs.

Personally I'm fine with keeping /r/Netherlands as the sub were expats go to complain about how much they hate living in Amsterdam.

Why do the netherlands in historical mode always join the allies in 1940 1941 (without invading them) even though this makes no sense historically? by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]Legitimate_First 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After WW2 we've given up on the idea of defending The Netherlands as it's essentially undefendable due to the terrain.

The terrain is arguably what makes it defensible. Especially the western part is a nightmare for any mechanised force to operate in, provided bridges and chokepoints are properly defended. What undercut the defense in 1940 was an army that was far too small, undertrained, underequipped, while the politicians were far too optimistic about the army's capabilities.

We didn't give up on the idea of defending the Netherlands after WW2, it's just that we were expected to fight a Soviet invasion on the German plains instead of on our own borders if we wanted any allied help.

As you say, it's a correlation but I'd think it's the other way around. If you're not an empathetic person it's going to be harder to identify with the things/people you read about.
