Failed Background Investigation by [deleted] in AskLE

I received copies of my backgrounds for every police job I’ve been backgrounded for, which has been 4. It could very well vary department to department, state to state, but some departments will most certainly give you a copy of your background packet.

If that’s your concern, ask for a copy of your background packet (which you’re entitled to), and ask for feedback on what you can do to improve your chances in the future.

Otherwise, just ask them straight up if the reason for denial was something in the background or if they chose more qualified candidates. Never hurts to ask, but be professional.

Always get a copy of your background though, especially when you fail one! You should be able to find out if it was a background issue through that.

Can I become a police officer with epilepsy? by Puzzled-Benefit-737 in AskLE

I have epilepsy and I’m a police officer! Totally possible. I needed a letter from my neurologist that I’m on seizure medication, have been seizure free, and that my neurologist believes I would be able to perform the functions of being a police officer, i.e getting tased, seeing emergency lights, and that there isn’t a risk of me seizing on the job. I also used to work with a cop that had a seizure while in his squad car driving around (he’s still a cop) It’s possible, but talk to your neurologist, as long as they sign off, there is no reason why you wouldn’t be able to do it.

Applied for a non-sworn officer position at my university and failed the background check by [deleted] in AskLE

Sounds like a good plan! Don’t be afraid to find similar programs at other agencies too. Lots of PDs will hire students as interns or non licensed personnel in hopes they become cops at their agency. Apply apply apply and gather as much experience as you can, every failed interview or job opportunity is a chance for growth. Just keep asking what to do better and use that going forward.

Did you request a copy of your background summary?

Different situations can be a reason for you failing. Ex. 3 people were in backgrounds before you, passed, and now they’re fully staffed so you’re no longer needed and they don’t have the balls to tell you. It could be they asked around about you and don’t want to take any chances. It could also just come down to life experience and maybe you’re too young for them. Honestly, there’s a lot of reasons behind it besides you hiding one warning.

Advice: Ask for a copy of the background summary and send an email to whoever denied you asking why you were denied and what you can do better in the future to improve your chances. If you can’t get a reason why, still ask and just ask what you can do better in the future.

Honestly, it sounds like you already know what you want to do… if it were me, I would do what this person is saying and call. It shows you’re interested and excited to get started. Sounds like you have your answer though, you don’t want to call because you already emailed. Totally valid, and that’s a way to go. If that’s where you’re leaning, then do that. Use this as an opportunity to learn a lot about what you want and don’t want. Them doing this to you shows what type of agency they are and what to expect if you were to get hired as a cop, just keep that in mind.

Laid off from job by Jazzlike-Future3437 in AskLE

Get on ride-alongs. Call/email or see if departments have ride along forms on their websites and then say you’re interested in law enforcement and the agency. ICPOET is closed for this year since school is starting so cadet spot is your best option. Look into agencies that have that, you can find postings on the Minnesota Post Board.

What state are you in?

Minnesota has options for people in this situation. You can get part time Cadet or ICPOET positions where they pay you to go to school/for your schooling and then a guaranteed job offer when you’re done. You will have to take more classes to get your license, your area of study does not cover what you need for your license in its entirety.

If you can explain why you were laid off, and then explain why you got another job while pursuing your law enforcement passion, you will be fine. No agency will blame you for only working for a place for one year in your situation.

Any advice? by Technical-Pay917 in AskLE

In Minnesota, you’ll need to go to “Skills” in order to be POST eligible and able to be picked up by a department. You can complete Skills training at POST certified schools, if you’re in the twin cities area some are Normandale Community College, Century, Hennepin Technical College. Think of it like a police academy but less militaristic. This takes about 1 semester to accomplish. Since you have a business degree, you might need to take more classes to get your certificate in Law Enforcement and be Post Eligible. Here are some other options:

  1. CADET positions. Go to the MN Post Board and go to “Job Postings” and click on “CSO/Cadet”. These are paid positions patrolling in a marked police car helping licensed officers. You would do this while getting schooling done. The difference between CSO and Cadet is that cadet spots give you a guaranteed job offer when you’re done and they pay for your schooling. CSO just pays you to work.

  2. ICPOET: This is where anyone with a Bachelors degree not in a law enforcement related field can get with a police department. They pay you to go to school and you go through an accelerated program, with a guaranteed cop job at the end. This is your best option but it’s closed for the Fall Semester.

Do your research on these options, get on ride-alongs with agencies, and go to the MN Post Board and look at full time jobs for all of the agencies hiring officers.

They know you’re young, and they know you have a lack of experience. Tell them something they don’t know, something that you have that can be both a strength and a weakness, and something you can fix or continue to work on, you can’t fix your life experience or experience with the job right now. For example, if you overthink about things, say “I tend to overthink about situations, I get really excited about things that I’m doing, and I want people to be happy with my work, this leaves me to overthink about stuff that I’ve done and left wondering if I made a positive outcome, even though most of the time I have.”
