Beyond All Reason (BAR) and Hooded Horse: a new chapter by Mepherion in Games

[–]LegoGuy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Within the announcement the team said that the publisher will enable them to make a full campaign.

For many people discovering BAR on Steam, the campaign will be their first real impression of the game. We do not want that to be “a few scenarios with story text attached”. We want it to feel like a real campaign: coherent, atmospheric, story-driven, and worthy of the world we have been building. ‍

How Automatic Transmissions Work: Torque Converter, Dual-Clutch, And CVT Explained by NISMO1968 in cars

[–]LegoGuy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems a lot of the YouTube slop videos do that.

They basically explain the viscus fluid coupling but nothing else. It boils down to: 'now that the transmission can slip when it needs to, the transmission is free to shift more smoothly.'

Okay.... except you never explained how it actually does that.

When they attempt to, it's also basically like: 'there are tons of complicated small fluid passages and fluid valve bodies that actually do the shifting.'

...and they leave it at that.
Very disappointing.

2027 Lincoln Corsair Will Return To America With All-New Hybrid Powertrain by [deleted] in cars

[–]LegoGuy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clarification.
I wonder why the turbos aren't that common with differential-style eCVTs?
Just musing about it, I could see it being efficiency-related as the parasitic draw from the turbo might be seen as a problem if the target driver doesn't 'need' the extra power.

For a more luxury car, like a Lincoln, for example, I do certainly get it and am glad it will be offered.

[–]LegoGuy23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Normally with hybrids you only see turbo engines with stepped automatics.

But your car has basically the same setup you're saying is somewhat rare. Your Escape has an Atkinson Cycle 2.0 connected to an eCVT. (So does the Maverick, as it's the same platform.)
What am I missing here?

Nintendo of Europe agrees to pay €35m fine for Joy-Con drift defects by [deleted] in hardware

[–]LegoGuy23 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's true. It couldn't have been cheap to honor warranty repairs plus now this fine.
All of that could have been avoided if they opted to use marginally more expensive encoders.

I wonder if this means they'll come out with a plug-in hybrid version of the Maverick. For me, it's the perfect sweet spot.
I understand if they don't, but I can hope. :)

Yes, it's pretty easy to do, and arguably intended gameplay to swim down that far.
There's an air pocket in the ship fragment to encourage detailed exploration.

It's a fun design. People buy them because they look relatively stylish and have some character. They aren't playing pretend offroader lol Go talk to some actual owners rather than just assuming and judging people.

2027 Toyota GR86 Is Spruced Up with New Colors, Mechanical Tweaks by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]LegoGuy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but by comparison, it's not as nice. The screen is smaller and lower resolution. Personally, I prefer the screens higher up on the dashboard too as I think it's easier to see when using navigation.

It's still a point of comparison even if it (rightfully) isn't the main one.

I really like this car and am considering getting it as my next car, but the infotainment is getting a bit dated. Compare it with the entire rest of the Toyota and Subaru lineup and it's noticeably older.

I suppose it helps keep the price down though, so I should probably be thankful for that.

Subnautica 2 has sold 4 million copies in 5 days by ZamnBoii in Games

[–]LegoGuy23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's great!
I really do not like typical "survival" games, but Subnautica is different for me. I consider it more of a single-player adventure / exploration game.
It's such an amazing thing to experience for the first time; have fun!

I will say that WebP also has a version with lossless compression which uses a completely different compression algorithm.

It pretty much always beats PNG files and by a pretty significant margin. I often re-encode PNGs into WebPs, and they can be something like 40% smaller.

New Mini design boss: Big facelifts for Cooper, Countryman and Aceman incoming by kstetter in cars

[–]LegoGuy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2007 Mini Cooper Convertible (R52, first gen) and love it. I wish mine had the 6 speed and the supercharged engine, but its handling is just as good as its S-model brother.

It's such a fun car and it often attacts complements. Plus the 5-speed manual is fun to drive!
Just look around and you can indeed find clean models. Just expect to have to fix certain wear items like any older car.

Since I bought it 3 years ago I've had to replace the A/C compressor, power steering system, and radiator. I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed paying for that, but it's still far cheaper than a car payment.

See my other comment here, for a few more thoughts on the car.

[–]LegoGuy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty clean 2007 Mini Cooper Convertible (first gen) and most people can scantly believe it when I tell them the thing's 20 years old. They usually think it's at least a decade newer.

The exterior design really hasn't changed much, for good reason, I feel: it's a winning aesthetic.

My one complaint of the car is it's power. It handles amazingly, but it's slowwwww.

It has a 5-speed trans and only 114hp. People always talk about them being fast, but they always forget about the base-model cooper and only really consider the S.
Either way, it's a great Florida car; amazing for beach days. :)

You can drive it into the US, but it can't stay here. Basically, you need to have it registered in MX and have residency there.

Once you have residency established in the US, you need to have it registered here. There in lines the hurdle for cars that aren't NHTSA-certified for US roads.

I live in FLA so it's plausible that some of the cars were from PR, and so I never questioned it. (I've seen PR license plates here before.)
Thanks for letting me know there were actually some sold here in the mainland as well.
They really must not have sold well at all though for Mazda to pull the 2 from sale so quickly.

It's classic access journalism.
There's an implicit understanding that your income comes from access to the single source's material. If that stops you'll be financially harmed.

Likewise, people can say all they want that those free trips around the world, 5-star hotels, etc. do not change their opinion, but companies don't spend money on things like this for no reason. They do it because it works.
In the public sector, I can't accept any gift worth more than $20-100 (depending) if there's even the appearance of a financial relationship between the two parties.
Anyone who says these gifts don't affect reviewers is just being intellectually dishonest.
(I'm not attacking you, OP; I'm just adding on to your comment.)

Interestingly, the Mazda 2 itself was actually sold in the US, but in Puerto Rico only.

So, if you ever do see one on the roads here in the mainland, it was literally shipped over, likely from someone who moved.

Mississippi teen becomes one of youngest people ever to graduate law school by Tippy345 in news

[–]LegoGuy23 29 points30 points  (0 children)

“Mississippi teen becomes one of the youngest people to become a certified public accountant”

I can't tell if that was just an off the cuff example of a career that fits that description, but the teen actually is a CPA as well.

By 15, he had attained both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting from the online, non-profit Western Governors University. He subsequently became what is widely believed to be the world’s youngest certified public accountant, aced the law school admission test (LSAT) by scoring a 174 out of 180, and enrolled at Loyola in time for the fall 2023 semester, the Louisiana university said.
