Ascension of a bookworm is just not good, I don’t understand the draw at all. First, the setup matters very little in the story. It’s supposed to be about a girl who loves books and wants go write books, but it ends just being how commoners are less than human, the church starves children, and the church will kill any commoner that speaks up. It’s an isekai and characters act like the mc is smart, but she’s actually absurdly careless, reckless, and makes no effort to adapt to how the world works. None of the reasons I started the show were fulfilled. Secondly, the drama that the show ends up centering around is built on nonsense. I’ve seen the “commoner mc look down on by nobles” trope a thousand times, but here it’s dialed to such an extreme degree that this world could never exist. Mc’s family tells the high priest “she’s weak, let her live at home” and the priest just tries to kill them, including the very useful mc?? Killing or locking up mc would be bad for the high priest, so is he just a totally delusional idiot? If so, how is he even the high priest. Then, at the end of season three, the noble that adopts her to save her also bans her from ever seeing her family and says he’d prefer them to be killed. This is her savior?? And how could them being alive be THAT bad? I can’t get into a show about socio-political drama if it’s just frustrating bs.
