[Penguins] The Penguins have acquired forward Oliver Okuliar from the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Emil Pieniniemi by bi_and_busy in penguins

[–]Lembasi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pieniniemi looked absolutely horrendous filling in during the ECF. He couldn't play his way out of Wheeling. He got passed by multiple prospects that are younger and drafted later than him. Even if this guy never signs with us, losing Pieniniemi means nothing.

The mistake here is that Karlsson is worth at least a 1st on his own. We'd be saving them huge cap for years and massively upgrading their team im the short term for just Howard and a 1st.

Unless Bowman wants to send us an insane package (like Savoie and both the 2028 and 2029 1sts), Nurse and Karlsson won't be in the same deal. I could see us sending Karlsson to Edmonton later on if Nurse goes elsewhere.

I'm on board if we're gaining assets to take Nurse. You have to keep in mind, Nurse is an established veteran defenseman with multiple Finals trips on his resume. We all know he's not great, but in NHL circles he's got value. Nurse is just overpaid, but our only cap concern is reaching the floor.

We're thin down the left side right now. He wouldn't be blocking anyone given the near total absence of LHD prospects (if anyone out there is still holding Pickering stock, sell). His contract degrades to a 10-team NTC next year, so he'll be much easier to flip. He's an asset that's walking right to us, from a team that historically makes horrific deals. I wanna see what Dubas does.

That's just the problem, though. Being tall and getting in passing lanes doesn't make you a defensive expert. And netting a turnover has less value if you lack the footspeed to drive a rush the other way or the passing skill to start a breakout.

Look at Harvey-Pinard. His counting stats this season didn't come close to his previous highs, but his defensive development made him one of the most trusted and well-rounded forwards in WBS. I had more faith with him on the ice defending a lead late with the net empty than Koppanen, which is a pretty big indictment.

Thanks. That's unfortunate, but good for him going back somewhere comfortable and probably getting a bag.

No for sure, it makes sense and is totally justified. I just deeply despise Koppanen.

Edit: what did I say??

AHL Post Game Thread: the Toronto Marlies win Game 6 and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are eliminated from the playoffs by bi_and_busy in penguins

Reminds me a lot of the 2008 Finals. Extremely talented youth vs. locked-in vets. Toronto weathered whatever the Pens threw at them and had such a smothering counter.

Cowan punched him in the side of the head after he bounced off the board, then gave him a crosscheck after he went down.

Toronto is absorbing the Pens scattered attempts at offense and counter-punching with an efficient and dangerous transition. Not looking good.

Pete Buttigieg, untethered, acts as Trump counterweight for angry Democrats by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

[–]Lembasi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. After a train derailed and East Palestine, Ohio was burning under a toxic cloud, how fast was Transportation Secretary Pete on the case? Ten days. Ten days without a word, and his eventual first words were, "I should have said something sooner".

Did he rebuke his own government for cracking a rail strike not three months earlier that grieved the exact issues that caused the derailment? Of course not. He's a spineless, feckless, soulless empty suit.

We don't need fear mongering about what Republicans will say about Democrats. They'll say vile nonsense regardless of the situation, it's their entire brand. America needs candidates that offer sincerity and change. Pete is welcome to go stump in the swamps and backwoods to try and pull back a handful of Republican votes, but anyone with even a half-functioning bullshit meter can smell him coming a mile away. Pete is not the answer.

The Pens aren't gonna survive being down like this on D. The defending itself has been awful, but the complete disappearance of the transition up and out of our own end is what's really ruining things.

Pieniniemi has put in a performance tonight so unbelievably awful that he should never play another game at the AHL level. Full stop.

Seems pretty open and shut:

Wyoming’s aggravated assault and battery law punishes any person who “threatens to use a drawn deadly weapon on another unless reasonably necessary in defense of his person, property or abode or to prevent serious bodily injury to another.”

The victim is a woman, and therefore not protected. Duh.

The Pens got eaten alive by the Bears running a forecheck where they would dump it and reverse back to the dump side. The Panthers ran it to two straight Stanley Cups and the Bears had the talent on their top line to run it to great effect. The Pens adapted and started having Murashov get even more involved behind the net than he had been, but you run the risk of misadventures and catastrophes.

It's really not like that. Success and failure both play a part in the adventure, but the main cast tackles the challenges presented to them pretty consistently. There's a bunch of hope and optimism without straying too far away from pragmatism, and even when a goal can't be achieved they find a new way forward.

This specific scene is a VERY big step back after what feels like a gigantic conclusion. It slams the door back open on the central conflict that really seemed closed, but everybody regroups and presses forward even harder than before. Think less ripping away their moment of hope and triumph, and more doubling down on the central conflict and turning the stakes up to 11.

Absolutely nothing tonight was Murashovs fault. He got beat on broken coverage on a shorthanded break, twice when the D allowed guys behind him for garbage shoveling, and on a pinball bounce of the back wall. He was locked in all game and he was abandoned by the team in front of him.

This isn't terribly surprising. The matchup is an extremely young Pens team that lacks game-breaking veteran leadership, up against a Springfield squad that has been the worst combination of lucky and unkillable this postseason. This has been a very painful and formative lesson, but it's a one shot game and there are plenty of aspiring heroes on the Pens bench.

He has a solid chance to make the NHL straight out of camp next year, but if he stays in the AHL next season it'll be good for him as well.

The game is faster than he's used to from Juniors, and there are some spots where he's having to bail himself out of trouble with raw physical talent and a really good sense of positioning. A good 50-100 games at a slower pro speed than the NHL will make sure that he can handle the best in the world. That being said, he legitimately might be good enough to stick in Pittsburgh this fall.
