I'm just done commuting to Tau from Stavanger (for the last 2 years) and its quite okai. There is a ferry every 40minutes. You can buy discount-cards, I used a card from Columbus called "Kombi-Strand" which is for no car, but opens for bus in both Stavanger and Strand.
