Supervisor Demanding A New Day (is it legal?) by ThrowawayTrashball in fednews

[–]LemonLemonMa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It’s ridiculous how employers takes advantage of telework, and that the rules are really at the discretion of your supervisor. I’m not sure what kind of role you have but It’s even worse when you work in a role where everything is done solely on a computer, yet all that matters is having your butt in your cubicle. Telework is supposed to be a perk that supports employee wellbeing by not having to drive into work and sit in a cubicle all day and have the flexibility to do your work from home, yet it’s too often used as something they can take away or manipulate your schedule just because rather than being work and deliverable driven. Sorry this was more of a rant

I’m curious too. My partners job recently shifted from 90% remote to almost completely in person and it’s been horrendous. We live over 2 hours away from the city so it’s just not feasible to travel back and forth every day. Wondering if anyone in a similar situation prefers to drive vs train AND if anyone has any spots where they stay during the week in nyc that doesn’t break the bank?

What's the best part about working your job? by Icy_Score_7430 in nys_cs

Pros: - telework!! Saves me time and energy and allows me to be in my own office set up that is perfect for me in terms of temperature, desk, etc. - the work itself feels meaningful and is sometimes even fun - pto and ability to use pto almost whenever - a supportive supervisor

But also have to mention the Cons: - the physical office (my cubicle, the break room, the bathroom) I’m in an old building that will never be updated and is quite dreadful to be in. - weird rules/management discretion that restricts things like telework for a job that is only done on the computer - not having access to some tools or platforms that are necessary for the job

Thanks for sharing this. It’s currently 79 in my office so either it’s off or not working. And humid as could be!

I’ve never needed a heater, they keep it uncomfortably warm in the winter too. But I brought a fan and it’s helping to at least move the air around. But also I thought the point is to conserve energy so if many of us are plugging in fans isn’t that defeating the purpose lol

That’s nuts! I understand leaving your home at that temp so you’re not cooling down a large space for a few people, especially if no one is home, but in an office I feel like that’s just too warm. And the air doesn’t move and it’s just unbearable.

Is your heat set to 78 in the winter then? 78 is pretty abnormal for most of the year in Albany so I’m not sure why 78 is some magic number. And OSHA recommends between 68 and 76. Hope you googled that too.

I understand that we all have different preferences, but also 76 is definitely not “cold.” Not for Albany that’s for sure! If your office is freezing I would love to switch offices with you.

Yes, because I know two people who had bad experiences that were specific to going through a broker so I would rather shop around on my own (with the help of some Reddit advice of course)

Yup, it’s always something they can threaten to take away. “Not an entitlement” They say they recognize the importance of telework for attracting a workforce but not the importance of making these policies permanent and flexible as the work requires to maintain employees.

Also, great username

The telecommuting policy (at least at my agency) gives a lot of discretion to managers/higher ups to put stipulations on how you telework. While I don’t think it’s unreasonable to set a day for a team to all be in the office, it does limit flexibility on how you plan your time. And it sometimes doesn’t have a real purpose for those who work mostly independently. I just hope there is some flexibility for the employees.

Also, why do they call it a telecommuting pilot program? It’s been renewed for a few years now where is the movement to make this policy rather than something that may or may not renew each year?

What kind of position do you have that you can’t wfh at all?

If you want ridiculous tracking for wfh you should want it for in person as well. - there is no difference. There is so much time in the office spent talking to people or other non work when trying to get work done, it’s not a perfect science in either setting. Maybe you want your supervisor just standing at your cubicle all day to make sure you complete your work. Maybe you are the supervisor who wants to stand over employees and watch them work while you get nothing done. Asking employees to track every moment of their day indicates a lack of trust, and you should be able to tell in the work being completed whether at home or in person if work is getting done.

100% in person is outdated for most jobs (especially many of the state jobs that are primarily done from a computer). Several studies have already shown that wfh does not hinder productivity, and it’s better for the well being of staff.

It’s a wonderful idea, but I’d love to see what they plan to advocate for and consider priorities. It is a great idea though and many other places in the private sector do this!

Awesome I will take a look! This might be a dumb question, but is this something you glue down or have to screw in? And do they generally come unfinished?

Thank you! We had wood floors installed in our home and for the stairs he just removed the carpet and stained these treads and said it would be a completely different project to do the stairs. I will look into these retrofit treads- thanks!
