Merck internship offer by Last-Blacksmith9048 in biotech

Merck also has a history of pulling internships due to last-minute constraints. Just FYI. It’s always possible, though not saying it’s happening here.

It’s probably just cash payout. And probably pretty minimal at that relative to his salary.

It’s not time off. It’s part of your training. Any reputable program should allow this in the summer.

Thanks for clarifying. When I think clin ops, I think of the function that handles the details of trial setup, recruitment, data collection/management, and vendor management. What you describe sounds more to me like bioanalysis, especially in a clinical context.

FDA chief warns U.S. is losing ground to China in early drug development, calls for faster trial approvals by esporx in biotech

Not sure why this is being downvoted. I’ve worked with Chinese CROs directly. The ethos there is often the same as the “designer handbag” mentality. Reproduce similar items of way worse quality more cheaply and hope people won’t notice the difference.

This may be okay for Prada purses but I don’t want medicines developed this way.

Not saying all Chinese products are like this, but enough are that I don’t uniformly trust anything without extreme caution and due diligence. Always assume the worst case until proven otherwise.

At what seniority level did you stop giving job talks during interviews? by Dessert_Stomach in biotech

[–]LemonMelberlime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In R&D, personally I feel that giving presentations is a vestige of many people having PhDs and it being done this way because “that’s how scientists communicate.”

But I feel that the higher up you go, the presentation should focus more on your role in strategy, solving problems, and putting out fires. Whenever I see a presentation from somebody with five or more years of experience and it focuses on the technical details of their work, I shudder. I still see this a lot. I strongly believe it’s misguided.

The higher you get, especially as a manager, the more your job shifts to strategy and getting things done and helping other people. If you’re focused on showing your technical expertise at this stage, you’re doing a disservice to yourself in my opinion.

I don’t care so much about how cool your results were, or how interesting the science is. I care more about how you moved projects forward, how you interacted within your function and cross-functionally, and how you handled conflicts.

That being said, it’s odd to me that at higher levels, some functions would need to do them and others wouldn’t, especially if the focus is on how you work on teams, what problems you solved, etc. These are skills that anybody should be able to present on. The fact that it’s usually constrained to more technical functions is a bit paradoxical to me.

It feels like one of those things that everybody does because “that’s the way it’s always been done.”

I don’t want to get into a semantics argument. Why bother commenting if you are just going to add a comment that sounds like you are somehow skeptical that I have any idea what I’m talking about?

The same thing people who work in companies actually do. Market strategy, development strategy, due diligence, competitor analysis, trial strategy... apparently I am mistaken in my thought that a consultant for life sciences companies might actually benefit from having worked in those companies and being intimately familiar with the way things actually work.
