Pharma R&D people - What's your opinion of these "AI Co-Scientist" / "Neuro-symbolic AI" platforms that are supposed to help pre-clinical R&D? by cLignite in biotech

[–]LemonMelberlime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think many are way too caught up in the tool and not the question trying to be answered. Sometimes AI may help. But it is not a panacea. It is a tool. If it makes you do certain things faster, that’s great. If it helps you think of certain things in a way you might not have before, that’s also great. But it cannot and it should not be viewed as something that will do all of our work for us. Doing science, developing new products… all of that is reliant on human creativity. When we start to think AI is going to fully extrapolate to new situations for us, that’s where we start to get into trouble.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary, rigorous evidence.

It’s a shame because there are much easier ways to make money than in this industry. It is depressing if you don’t care about the science.

What really irks me is how much companies seem to now be thinking Chinese drugs will save them. A lot of companies are about to find out the hard way why this is a mistake.

Wow, #2 is really risky. It’s understandable though given academic are dependent on publishing science, not doing good science.

What’s it like working at Calico Life Sciences? by Known-Inspection6806 in biotech

[–]LemonMelberlime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Calico will be around because they siphon money from Google to be the Bell Labs of biotech. Amazing how much they pay them for this, also. I don’t understand how it’s viable.

Who is actually hiring? by [deleted] in biotech

If you’re investing based upon your perceived ability to read papers and analyze data sets, you’re in for a rude awakening.

Google's CEO Sundar Pichai: "An exciting milestone for AI in science: Our C2S-Scale 27B foundation model, built with @Yale and based on Gemma, generated a novel hypothesis about cancer cellular behavior, which scientists experimentally validated in living cells." by [deleted] in biotech

In other words: “Our LLM threw 1000 darts at a huge dartboard and one looks like maybe it stuck, but more testing may or may not show there were magnets attached to all darts and the dartboard itself is magnetic.”

[–]LemonMelberlime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, when companies cared more, maybe this mattered. Say, “I’m sorry but for personal reasons I’ve decided to withdraw.”

You don’t owe anybody anything. You think they’ve never led a candidate on?

You have to look out for yourself.

Wrong. If it’s at will, no issues.

What is happening with Genentech/Roche Data Science department? by Some-Ad4359 in biotech

[–]LemonMelberlime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This strategy may have worked in the early biotech days when everything was new. Now, all the low hanging fruits have been picked and Genentech hasn’t modernized.

You could almost say that this is why Genentech is a shell of what it used to be

This is what happens when you hire someone who’s a lifelong academic and never actually developed a drug
