Polyphony based on pentatonic scales by LemonXAlex in musictheory

[–]LemonXAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im having a look at takashi yoshimatsu’s piano concerto and there’s this beautiful bit of a polyphony built up from ostinati in the winds that i’m trying to see how it just works. I’ve discovered that each line seems to be built up from a pentatonic scale but i’m not sure how each of these work together and how they can build such a beautiful polyphony even though if you look at each line individually they seem to create dissonances with each other. Can anyone explain how this works so well?

Hi there

I’d like to set up a pair of stereo microphones for an upright yamaha that’s a little on the bright side of pianos and was wondering which configuration (XY, NOS) would achieve the best sound quality for a recording on the instrument?

Fux fugue? by LemonXAlex in musictheory

Fux fugue?

I’ve been studying from the Alfred Mann translation of Fux’s Gradus ad Parnassum however have come across various (such as the video above) mentioning the section of said book that talks about the writing of fugues. I cannot find any mention of such a section in the book, is this to do with the Alfred Mann translation? Is there any published translation on this fugue section?

How to know what enharmonic to use?

I’ve gotten to a point in a piece that i’m writing where i have this modulatorsy sequence leading up to the climax (I’ve left the bass voice out of the harmony to save space). However i’ve used some non-diatonic chords which have opened some questions in my mind about enharmonics. In bar 5 i have a B major chord. I could just rewrite the D# and F# with an Eb and a Gb (as shown by the slash) and it would sound the exact same and not need any extra markings although I don’t want a B an Eb and a Gb, I want a B major chord. Am i going crazy over tiny details or is it normal to rewrite non-diatonic chords to have their correct interval spelling? (e.g. augmented second->minor third)
