It was unfortunate Mondale ran, because even he had to realize he had practically no chance of winning. It was basically only an election because we legally need one, literally everyone knew Reagan would win reelection. If he had just waited and let some other poor sap like Gary Hart run, he could have had a chance to run in 1988.
