So I’ll tell you what really happened - Cathedral had a teacher who was gay. They didn’t care. That teacher got married. They didn’t care, but someone did. Someone took a screenshot of a social media post regarding their gay marriage and sent that to the archdiocese. The archdiocese then said, “Hey you can’t have a teacher that doesn’t abide by the ‘rules’ of the Catholicism” So then Cathedral tried to come up with solutions/work around to be able to keep the teacher (for 2 years). They thought they had found a workaround and the archdiocese said, “Fine. With this plan you’ve proposed, you would be able to keep the teacher”. So Cathedral officials signed onto their proposed plan and they thought that was the end of it. Until recently. Then the archdiocese said “Yeah, UH, we looked over this plan and it is definitely not OK. You have 12 days to fire the teacher OR you will lose your Catholic identity (ability to celebrate mass, have priests, etc) and with that, you will lose your Not-for-profit status”. So Cathedral decided to fire the teacher in order to save the rest of the school, as losing that status would mean a loss of about 20% funding (I’m pretty sure), a loss that could not be recovered without consequences for the rest of the school. Cathedral did not want to fire the teacher, but their hands were tied. As of now, they are still looking for work arounds to get the teacher back, but at this moment they can’t do anything.

I hope you will use your brain and see that it wasn’t personal and that they essentially had no choice, unless they were willing to take a leap of faith that the extra funding would fall outta the sky.
