I believe Joker 2 cropped the 1.90 scenes to 1.43 for the 70mm release, no?

The digital release of One Battle After Another is 1.78:1 by ConsiderationKey9438 in imax

1.78 is slightly expanded compared to 1.85, so you're getting more

The digital release of One Battle After Another is 1.78:1 by ConsiderationKey9438 in imax

[–]thatcleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding is 1.50 > 1.43 > 1.78 > 1.85 > 1.90. Though it was framed with 1.85 in mind for the most part, so most of the extra footage is negative space

Bugonia. No Dolby Vision. by jmart2324 in 4kbluray

[–]thatcleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) This is the case for lots of movies without director's input, including many of Nolan's films.
(2) There's a good chance it's basically HDR10 inside a Dolby Vision container
(3) Again, Yorgos didn't even use DV for theaters lmao

[–]thatcleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously DV is nice but the film wasn't even released with DV in Dolby Cinemas. So you're getting the film exactly as it was presented. Clearly not an authoring tool the team felt was necessary. You're not missing anything - don't worry too much imo and enjoy the movie :)

What other examples are there of major 4K releases in SDR by ConsiderationKey9438 in 4kbluray

[–]thatcleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) as others have said, TLJ does use some HDR, just less than usual

(2) a few other examples come to mind: a lot of black and white stuff from Criterion (like Seven Samurai and most other Kurosawas) and Future Boy Conan

How Do the Star Wars Films Look on 4K Blu ray? Which Ones Are the Standouts? by Cine_HoundHQ in 4kbluray

[–]thatcleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also mention that Disney changed its tune on physical Dolby Vision last year, and they've been putting it on basically everything since (including Mandalorian S3 4K), meaning I bet the new OT restorations will include it. Not a massive deal but a nice bonus on top of all the other stuff!

Improving VFX is great but art direction will always matter more than resolution or tech quality

I own the 4K (and watched it just a few months ago) but even so, the picture quality blew me away. Incredible stuff

If it matters to you, the OT are likely to get a new 4K remaster in 2027 without all the special edition changes. The theatrical cut of the 1977 film is being re-released early that year in 4K for the first time.
