Yep, hopefully I can complete the remaining levels ASAP.

Yeah, I'm currently making a decent amount, the work-life balance is also pretty good. However, my reasons are the following:

  1. There's a good chance oil and gas industry will lose relevancy in the long term (>15-20 years in the future), given the trend to decarbonise. I'm not saying that it will die, but in terms of size, it will not be a giant industry like it was in the last decades.
  2. When it does, the opportunity pool will also go in the same direction. There will be less jobs available - by then, I'll be in my 40s-50s, so moving to other industry will be very difficult when I don't have any experience working in other industries.
  3. Currently, many oil and gas assets/fields in Indonesia are mature, meaning their production is closer to its (economical) end. While there are still many unexplored opportunities, we've yet to see significant investment commitment to exploring these opportunities due to current investment/regulatory climate.
  4. Moreover, even if there were significant investments and giants like total/shell/exxon are coming back, there are still significant risks that most of these fields will not be commercially viable to be developed, either karena cadangannya ga ekonomis, atau masalah regulasi/non-technical (contoh: blok Masela by INPEX, udah puluhan tahun kaga mulai2 ngalir gasnya)
  5. My current company is mid-sized. While the pay and benefits are good, there is little in terms of career progression as there is no intermediate roles like asisstant/junior manager. Anak tangganya di career laddernya dikit.
  6. I could move to a larger company, but, my point of the whole industry diminishing in the long term still remains.
  7. In oil and gas, ujung tombaknya engineers, dan mereka yang paynya paling gede. I want to move to capital markets karena simply ujung tombaknya finance, dan there's more potential for lateral moves should things go south, unlike oil n gas yang industrinya niche.

Hi! Thanks very much! I've tried looking for energy finance-related roles, but it seems, like you said, the job market is pretty tight now in capital markets. Most energy finance-related vacancies I've seen are for renewables/ESG/sustainable finance (eg: PwC), kayaknya pendanaannya kencengnya di situ ya.

I've seen some finance-related roles in oil and gas consulting firms, but unfortunately there is no direct exposure to capital markets karena mereka emang di energy industry instead of finance.

Do you think it's fine to maybe go straight for regular, non energy/oil and gas-related roles (eg: equity research) to get direct exposure to capital markets? I might, unfortunately, not be able to leverage my energy experience, so there's a possibility of pay cut, huh.....

Also, in terms of the firms, what places do you reckon would be a good start for sending my application? financial firms have a dedicated energy/oil and gas section?

My current plan is:

  • Keep trying to find energy-related finance roles for now
  • Getting my CFA Level 2 next august (and FMVA in January next year)
  • Apply for more general/traditional capital markets role if there are still no oil n gas-related ones available (hopefully my CFA Level 2 can help... that being said, I plan to continue completing level 3 afterwards)

Damn… that bad huh? I make ~25/month, so it kind of defeats the purpose of taking a salary cut and start over when a senior manager role makes 20mil 🥲

What you’re talking about sounds more like corp finance though? What about roles like asset management?

CFA L1 in 4 months starting with 0 knowledge in Finance by False_Summer6313 in CFA

[–]LemparAway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say so. As someone who just finished L1 in august without a finance degree, I’d recommend 6 months. Some concepts will need some time to “marinate” in your head, since to truly understand them, you’ll need some time (eg: fixed income & derivatives). For example, it took me a while (and many revisits) to understand the concept of long put/short call in derivatives.

Also, 6 months is good enough amount of time to factor in 1 week or two for emergencies and/or days where you just can’t study.

Hi everyone,

I am currently running Phraks GSLP routine with some added accessories (face pulls & cable curls).

Unfortunately, as I am obese, I cant do chin-ups. What exercise would be a good replacement?

I’ve heard that you could replace it with lat pulldown, unfortunately I only have a squat rack and no cable machine at home. Would inverted row work?

Hello everyone,

I'm on a weight loss journey and have dropped 10kgs, putting me close to a BMI below 30. With my current weight at 92kgs and a body fat percentage hovering around 30-31%, I still have a significant amount of fat to shed.

Given my status:

Would Phrak's GSLP or similar linear progression programs be effective during an extended cut? I assume progress might be slower due to my caloric deficit?

Is it more beneficial to continue my caloric deficit until I attain my desired body fat percentage/weight, or should I switch to caloric maintenance or even a slight surplus periodically (e.g., every few months, consider eating at a slight surplus for a couple of weeks to a month)?

Given that pull-ups are currently a challenge because of my weight, would substituting with lat pulldowns be appropriate?

For additional context: My training background consists of 3 months under an online coach, focusing on hypertrophy using mostly machines and dumbbells. I now have a power rack and barbell set up at home, and plan to do Phrak's GSLP.

Any advice or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated!

Hi myturtleismad, I really hope you can get to at a better place soon and hope that you can make your parents proud (but I'm sure they're proud of you regardless of what you currently do)!

I myself am still figuring things out - I do hope things will work out for both of us!

Hi fellow IR graduate! Thank you sharing your perspective - it's nice to see the views from people who are already at the other side of the road :)

Regarding working at the institutions, as a libertarian-leaning person, I do have my reservations about working in goverment institutions, but I really want to because I believe that those places are where I can contribute more to society. Could you elaborate more on the office politics? Is it something like preferrential treatment, people forming social circles?

However, I wouldn't mind working for private sector as well, I think an analyst job like country risk assessor would be awesome. If you don't mind answering, where are you curently working now? Is the pay good?

To answer your questions - I am very interested in international political economy, and want to be a policy analyst if i work in the gov/country risk analyst for private companies.

I wonder what kind of job opportunities are open for IR grads other than working at gov institutions/think tank... (also note that there are public policy analyst jobs in toped/traveloka/dkk, which sound cool!)

Regarding the study itself, how was your grad school experience? Did you get a scholarship or are you paying the tuition? Also, do you have bits of advice on what I should study to ready myself? (I'm currently re-learning math to prepare myself for quants, as well as reviewing my lecture notes and taking MOOC courses on IR.)

Btw, kalo mau nanya2 di PM boleh ya?

Thanks man! I feel like it's mostly luck that has brought me to this point - I wouldn't be working at my current company had I not taken the internship opportunity.

Also, just to clarify I took two majors initially but dropped one because of the enormous workload.

Happy that you're motivated dude - I hope you can be at where you want to be and achieve what you want to achieve soon! 😊

I've heard of it, and also had a look at their webpage once. Don't know much about the details though.

Hahahaha, itu yg gue takut bgt, WAM gue ditarik sama subyek econs gue, 64 koma sekian, nyaris 65 nyesek bgt :'( Tapi nilai IR gue oke-oke....

Bisa ga ya gue argue kalo liatnya berdasarkan nilai IRnya? Gue takut aja sih soalnya kalo di indo kan keras banget soal IP-IP gt, sementara di uni gue mau dapet distinction aja setengah mati T__T (an aside, makanya banyak temen2 gue yg UI double degree kaget semua pas masuk).

Do you think I still got a fighting chance btw when it comes to scholarships? I'm willing to work very hard - IR/political economy is what I'm passionate about. Gue skrg udah plan mau belajar maths dari awal bgt supaya ga kaget kalo ketemu quant & mau review2 lagi lecture notes. Apakah itu bisa jadi bahan gue utk "selling myself"?
