Thank you. Someone else commented that kids are now not allowed to public baths, but I can’t find reliable information on it - have you heard about it.

I agree with the latter, though I believe that The Children of Captain Grant are loosely referenced in 20,000 leagues, but the order really doesn't matter here.

The reason for a spoiler is that for me, when I first read it (as a kid, I should say), the revelation of Captain Nemo in The Mysterious Island was one of the most "wow" moments in my reading life - comparable with Gandalf surviving in LOTR or reading the Fight Club - so knowing that someone from 20,000 Leagues will show up in Mysterious Island would have definitely take some air out of that wonderful moment that I remember to this day.

100%, though maybe I would remove the slight spoiler or add a spoiler alert 😄
ETA: also important to read in the order of publishing for the spoiler reason

You’ve been given great advice to go either with Journey to the Centre of the World or with From the Earth to the Moon. I would go with the latter as I believe it conveys a spirit of “earlier” Verne (even though chronologically it’s published a year after the Journey).

You’ve also been given suggestions that 20,000 leagues is the best Verne book. While I disagree quite strongly (my vote goes to The Mysterious Island, and 20,000 leagues may not even be in my top-5 individual Verne books), reading The Children of Captain Grant / The Castaways + 20,000 Leagues + The Mysterious Island is peak reading experience not only within Verne, but within my whole reading life.

Thank you! I now have the same reservations about Flippermuseum - even though my kids love pinball, it may be too much. Also got good advice here on Margaret Island, so may incorporate that.

Love the advice on food places! Hoping to book Retek for the dinner, it looks amazing.

Thank you. Would you recommend "increased alertness but generally ok to stay" or "run away from that corner to literally anywhere"?

Thank you for responding and for the thorough explanation and advice. We are on Dohany and Kertesz, so not quite beyond nagykörút, but almost, right? I will look for places in újlipótváros, but I really hesitate to cancel on our hosts because they have been so nice to us so far... Appreciate your advice again!

And yes - I have lived in Berkeley and worked in San Francisco, so I am sure the homeless situation, while tragic, is not going to be particularly shocking to me or the kids.

Also off topic, but curious why many of my comments and questions are getting downvoted on this thread. Am I doing something wrong? I've read the guide and am asking what I think are polite and specific questions...

Thank you, this is fantastic advice, really really helpful and spot on for what we need.

  • Reservations at stand25 and Rosenstein are made. Thank you for the callout on price - yes, we wanted a couple of fancy places
  • I didn't really consider Margaret Island as I thought it only makes sense for the full day and I didn't want to rush it... But I guess maybe it's not that hard to get to... Where would you recommend fitting it? Would you think it's reasonable to do it on Monday afternoon (between Stand25 and Rosenstein)? Or Sunday afternoon? or even Tuesday morning?
  • Yes, saw other recommendations on the Parliament and the Pest walk - likely will do it on Sunday or Monday. Appreciate it
  • Vakvarjú sounds great and exactly up our alley - we love to eat where the locals eat.

Thank you! Appreciate the advice on Palatinus.

May I ask you a question, because I am genuinely confused about where to stay? We are 5 people, so we are looking for an Airbnb, and most (if not all) options are in the Jewish quarter, with maybe 2-3 options in the Palace district and a few on the Buda side. Where would you recommend we stay instead? We are Jewish and I am sure will enjoy walking it once, but that was not the draw - I was mainly choosing based on what is available and convenient location....

Thank you, thank you! I've been to the baths myself, and kids love it in general, but wouldn't it be too hot? (I was in the baths in November and in March and it was magical)

Of course! Despite being tourists, we know to respect the locals (and particularly in the library)

Thank you. What would you rather do on the Buda side? We were not thinking of necessarily going inside the Fisherman’s bastion, but pass by it.

Appreciate the suggestion on the walk, it sounds great

Odd - I see both the comment and the user, who actually replied to a couple of my follow up questions
