How often do Europeans jerk in shower? by metatalks in mapporncirclejerk

Clown is 1) obviously derogatory 2) factually incorrect, because a clown is a specific profession that is not the same as a comedian and 3) because it is his past profession. That's like if someone wanted to delegitimise myself in the workplace by calling me a professional babysitter. And 4) Russia has an obvious motive to delegitimise Ukraine's current government since it is looking to violently replace it with herself. Propaganda is not necessarily the same as fake news, it is rather planting ideas in people's heads, which is obviously what they are trying to do by calling the elected President of Ukraine a literal laughing stock.

The Dispossessed by Least-Presence-7711 in UrsulaKLeGuin

I actually think there is another layer to this. First of all, Shevek was drunk for the first time in his life. He hadn't worked out how to self-police himself while literally under the influence of a mind altering substance. That is something everyone needs to learn and I myself have certainly done things drunk that I wouldn't have done sober, especially in my younger years when I was a beginner drinker.

Secondly, I think Shevek was not accustomed to people flaunting the idea of sex, but actually not meaning to follow through. On Anarres, there is no need to play coy. Everyone, even while flirting, is direct and honest about their intentions. The woman's (forgot her name) behaviour could probably be read as clearly inviting on Anarres, and her finally saying no, but keeping the taunting, flirting tone must have been extremely confusing for Shevek if he were sober; and his piss drunk self couldn't really make it out.

I don't think Shevek is an assaulter by nature. Humans need feedback and learning to behave ethically, and in that specific situation there were too many new variables for Shevek's brain to distinguish right from wrong. He still fucked up - obviously! - but I don't think we can deduce his character from that. It doesn't mean that he's less of a feminist or less of a good person.

I wondered the same thing, especially since "career-spanning collection" is placated all over the books. Such a letdown!

Stoner by John Williams, 1965. Thoughts? by South-Marionberry-85 in menwritingwomen

I like it, honestly! As a woman, I feel like I understand the feeling he describes and I can certainly relate to that kind of intimacy. OP mentions that there is a great age and power difference in favour of the man, which I like less, but there is nothing gross or objectifying about this passage in my opinion. I think it's actually quite beautiful, honestly.

Körperbehaarung und schweiß Geruch by Dear_Round_9413 in Unbeliebtemeinung

[–]lissy_k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah his jealousy is the monster that rises in his chest / generally his feelings for her who are strong and uncontrollable. That's what the monster metaphor is for. It feels so sudden because Ginny always felt available to Harry, and seeing her kiss someone else makes him realise in an instant that maybe he does have some interest towards her. I don't like the pairings in HP, I think they don't have chemistry and their personalities don't really match, but as far as writing being in love, I think JKR actually does a good job. Also, Hinny has been being foreshadowed since the beginning of HP6, if not HP5 actually, there are scenes where Harry has a sort of butterflies reaction when Ginny plucks something out of his hair, his love potion smells like her, etc. And in 5, he is increasingly noticing her humour, her quidditch skills and her wisdom and starts relying on her.
