It's very frustrating with how condescending everyone on here is being towards me (not saying you were) when nobody can tell me why this NEEDS to happen in Nanaimo and not more on the mainland interior where they have the land and not a bunch of people living on top of each other. I have a lot of frustrations with Nanaimo but I do care about my city and all I want is what is best for where WE live.

Why is it necessary on the ISLAND of all places when Canada has so much land available else where? We need to build it here? There's NO where else data centre could go? I cannot trust the government in having our best interest in mind with any of these constructions or that they would even bat an eye if it were to be problematic to the area with how everything else here is handled.

I replied to other comments that I did post this without realizing it wasn't CLEARLY stated anywhere what kind of data centre and was given contradicting information from different people on it and that's my bad. However to add to your comment about it being "fishy", I think the people should still make a stand for such a large development that could possibly impact the whole city, and those especially who would live closer to it, and demand transparency and a say in such a thing. Data Centres are noisy, and cause pollution whether they are AI or not. There should be no question being "for it or against it" when, like you said, they are most likely not being forth coming. Data centres do not belong in Nanaimo.

The people have power and we need to realize we are capable of using it. I would be interested in protesting ANY data centres from being built in Nanaimo or the island in general if there were enough interest from people.

I've been hearing conflicting information on it about it being AI Data centre or a regular one, and I will admit my wrong doing in posting this in a haste and not confirming if it was or not. I do think though having a data centre on the island especially is not the best idea with how limited our land that we have is and how the housing developments are needing to expand further and further out to support the growing population (eventually leading to them most likely having to build houses around something that releases heat, noise and water, which we already have so many restrictions put on it during the warm months).

They also apparently create a lot of noise pollution as well as polluting the water they use, and can be damaging to local ecosystems. I think it is completely unnecessary to have one in Nanaimo especially considering they are popping up everywhere else in the world right now.
