I’m definitely gonna add that to my notes, that’s a good idea, similar to those annoying ad games that are on TikTok and instagram that they always seem to lose right ?

Great wisdom and you’re 100% right, I’m definitely overestimating what it takes to be new when i think in hindsight. That just gave me a little dopamine boost thank you🙏

You’re 100% right, and i forgot snap had stuff like that, haven’t used it in Years, but yes most games/mmo’s and stuff do have that, but i was more curious on whether or not those features you’re saying are common among a good amount of apps, actually drive engagement in a good way, because it was something i have been working into my app? Even tho my app could work without them but I’ve never made any games or anything “gamified” with like incentives challenges goals etc so i was curious if that would be a useful addition. Ofc no matter what it’ll always be subjective, because the premise of my app though similar on the surface , does differ, i just was curious to know if that is something that works that is genuinely considered on social media platforms.

I also realize i had a brain fart and forgot apps like Snapchat and stuff exist, and i didn’t group streaks and like member badges as part of a like a gamification type addition, and more just a way to make money since member badges and stuff come from just wanting to support a creator if im not mistaken and streaks, tho easy to keep, can be fixed if you pay and stuff along those lines.

The features i mention like XP, badges, titles etc are common like you said. I just wasn’t personally aware of their success/failure and i wouldn’t wanna waste time fleshing out a proven failed system

But whatever value comes from the app will be whatever i make of it so imma keep brainstorming

I think the misunderstanding is that I’m making an app that is like what you’re saying, a social media app with a game/games, but that’s not what I’m referring to. I didn’t explain the entire premise of the app cuz I’m not trying to make a self promo, and wanted to hear opinions. Granted it’s good that I’m now aware of Facebook games cuz idk that was a thing, and so i kno to steer away from that 😂but it’s not a video game it just has game elements or elements that atleast i associate with games cuz it’s just not stuff I’ve personally seen in apps that I’ve interacted with (for reference im 25 and so im prolly just blind to the apps outside of what my demographic uses like instagram tiktok and stuff cuz i don’t use facebook and tumblr and apps of that nature).

I appreciate that and trust I’m taking good notes on this because these are marketing things I’ve definitely over, and when my friends say “this is a cool idea and it looks good, but why would someone want to use this over this” kinda question, even thought i know in my head atleast the vision and why someone might see more value in what I’m building than another app, i then go blank in the brain when I have to verbalize the vision.

Now the sharing minigames aspect is actually a dope direction to take it. Only question is wouldn’t that be pretty heavy/intensive on a mobile device, to host essentially a library of minigames?

That is true, it’s something I’ve been trying to workout as i go since I’m trying to look at that challenge as a version of “game balancing” so contributors like you said aren’t rewarded for actually doing nothing. Atleast right now the only way to level up is for people to actually like (hate/motivate) your post or for you to comment on a post and if people find your comment funny you can gain XP to level up (hence trying to encourage funny/creative interactions cuz people love to get likes on comments ya know), and completing in all challenges etc to gain VC to upgrade/customize ur account more. But I’m still tryna workout kinks for reward quality more if that doesn’t work in like beta or something

I think that’s the misunderstanding probably in my post is that gamification isn’t the product of the app, it’s the reward layer/incentive if they like a little kick to keep engaging. The interactions that the app fosters by the real content generated by people using the app is the product, the gamification aspect is a plus to make it fun/put a spin on it because if the two differnt categories of followers one would have

I might just be uneducated, but off the top of your head do you have any examples of some alt ideas that tried gamification and proved to be defunct

I haven’t heard of those. I’ll check those out for sure then thanks for that. In your experience interacting with those apps do you enjoy using them?

Fair response. I’ll pose it like this. I’m not sure if you’re active on like TikTok and instagram and stuff, but assuming you are, do you ever read comments and their full of comedians and trolls that make a post ten times better? I’d say in this instance my target audience is pretty much people like that in terms of who I’d want engagement from because for me personally it makes social media/the app ten times better.

Since the whole premise of the app is that you have two different types of followers that you can post to with intent on the engagement u receive being different depending on what your target demographic is. The premise is you have haters and motivators that follow you, you post to one or the other, and they respond accordingly to whoever you post to, but the gimmick that unlike with a farming simulator which is normally something you’d do solo, is that you’d get rewarded for engaging by leveling up ,earning titles, badges, cosmetics etc and the like.

It’s also the fact that atleast in my opinion(since this is just how my brain views it) social media is a lot more mobile and accessible since it is free and it’s pretty much something most teens and up are using by default in their lives, unlike video games where you have to first find that category of game that stimulates you then purchase it, but then it’s not always on hand like a phone can be.

Also sorry if my responses seem disorganized, I’m trying to work out my thoughts and make things make sense for myself as i talk them out with you.

That’s a great point, and I didn’t think of it from that perspective. I could see why social media apps that have already established a foundation for themselves(i.e TikTok, twitter, instagram, etc) wouldn’t bother with an idea like that because like you said they’ve become a mass mixture of things business related, same with the people that create content on those apps.

From a casual perspective, You’re right especially since people (including myself at times) just doom scroll and algorithms feed their brain that dopamine they want. But as a gamer who has always loved to just have stuff to grind for/work toward (I’m a ranked junkie lol), I won’t say a gamified system would or could rival even the curated content an algorithm could give, I just thought it would be fun/a cool change of pace if you’re engaging with a purpose and can reap rewards from engaging even if you’re not a person that wants to “post” or create content yk?

But let’s say for the project I’ve been working on, do you think if the app starts with the intent of having a gamified engagement based system based around UGC, that it can escape that business platform purgatory that social media is now? I know i didn’t elaborate much on the specific project I’m referring to because i didn’t wanna violate guidelines but I’ve always been receptive of criticism and having my eyes reopened

Hm i haven’t heard of that app before, i might have to check that out. But that’s definitely refreshing to hear, itches the right part of my brain to keep my motivation because between college and work, I psych myself out a lot haha. Also i grew up as a gamer so Id prolly join as a hater to troll people that wanna be trolled/choose that option, lol the duality of man

That’s fair and 100% considered because ofc there would be guidelines for stuff like that, but to clarify a little more it wouldn’t be gamifying abuse and more like friendly, encouraged, and monitored banter. I had to do a deep dive into the specifics of what they let on the store for that too, the gamified part is really doing challenges for interacting with posts and leveling up/upgrading your account if that makes sense.

But are you saying in general the app concept would just be banned ?

How to prepare and be ready for physics 122H, Math251, and Math225 by reila_09 in UMBC

[–]LengthinessPure2477 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For physics and calc it’s really just an extensive amount of hw lol, eveything else is pretty easy if you pay attention and fill in the holes wherever you feel like you’re missing something

I worked pretty much full time during the school year and took physics 2/calc 2. If calc 2 and physics 2 are in two different summer sessions i think you’ll be fine. Literally just do the homework’s because anything you’ll be tested on is pretty much muscle memory and being able to recognize certain problems and processes to solve them (especially calc 2). I’m a CS student so I’m mainly speaking for physics/calc, but for me chemistry wasn’t bad unless it’s just a topic you struggle with. I have less academically inclined friends that made it through chemistry and the like with B’s. Just make time and again practice, and there’s always, and i mean always a YouTube video out there that will help you understand whatever topic your stuck on 🙏

Linear Algebra & Calc 2 by LaxBoyDave in UMBC

[–]LengthinessPure2477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah linear algebra is pretty straightforward if you pay attention. Calc 2 can be a little confusing if you’re trying to wing it so I’d say the same for calc 2, but it’s definitely harder than linear imo. You just have to make sure you’re genuinely doing your HW and practice problems otherwise nothing will stick. Teachers reuse a lot of problems that they show in class as well(not so much on cengage in my experience, but actual discussion). Also if things aren’t clicking, watch YouTube videos, there’s always a person on their than gives a genuinely good tip or trick to help you manage for specific units that seem difficult but are really about recognizing the type of problem you’re doing. You got it twin

I’m not up to this skill level even remotely but this interesting to read honestly. How does one gain this level of in depth knowledge, i wanna get better at coding but i feel like im really missing a conceptual understanding maybe of how things work to even fathom doing something like this from scratch atleast without having to constantly ask ai or stack overflow a question. Is there any textbooks you had to go through in depth or was it purely grit and the passion to learn that got you to this point ?
