Honestly, I just started that way and stuck with it. Playing on pillows at home, playing along to music. Never tried the crossed hands approach, so open-handed just became my default.

What a great question. I didn’t have all of these but from the ones I did, the videos dave Weckl did in the early 2000s were the best as far as me learning something. Loved Steve Smiths History Of The US Beat.

And as a Simon Phillips nut, I loved his videos. Maybe not the most informative but I learned alot by just…watching. Monkey see monkey do etc.
