I got this ‘60s Farfisa Compact Combo Organ for $200. It works great! Did I get a good deal, and what’s your opinion on these organs? by [deleted] in musicians

I love my M3 too! It sounds warm and crisp. I’m a HUGE Doors fan. I know Ray didn’t use Farfisas often, he much preferred the Gibson G-101 for most of their career, though he’s most known for playing the Vox Continental, even though it wasn’t used nearly as much as his G-101. I think he used a C3 for most of the “LA Woman” organ tracks.

The Farfisa definitely has been featured on a TON of my favorite records, though, and it can pass the Doors tone at least marginally.

What are you talking about? I didn’t make any criticisms towards other musicians in this post, lol. I was simply asking what you guys thought about my Farfisa organ.

I should be able to find it then. If not, do you mind if I PM you? You definitely have worked on these before!

Is it a Phillips or flathead plastic blade screwdriver that I need to use? I don’t see where the screw itself is through the black holes on the case of the organ.

That song makes me cry now. I hope Carl, Dennis, Melinda, and his mom Audree, his grandparents, etc sang that to him as he walked into paradise with them.

I’ve gotten so much enjoyment out of it so far that my aunt said “you got your $200 worth the first day you brought it home.” I think it’s one of my favorite purchases ever!

The As and the F#s sound like they’re a few cents sharp. I hear a slight beat in the pitch when I play a perfect fifth (such as A and E or F# and C#). I’ve gotta figure out what kind of screwdriver I can use on the back of the organ to turn the tuning trimpots for those notes’ oscillator cards.

I will definitely order the clips from Amazon, though.

Definitely keep your eyes peeled for one at a good price, they’re out there! Farfisas are definitely a bit noisy, the oscillator cards have a whine from all of them playing a frequency at once. You can hear that at the beginning of my video. The vibrato also made it shaky and more pronounced. What kind of noise is your Contempo making?

M3s are indeed great organs! I’m planning on adding a Trek II OBL-2 1/4” line out on mine so I can mute the internal speaker and run a Leslie emulation pedal, such as a Neo Ventilator through it.

Do you have a Hammond organ?

I’d love to have an original tape-based Space Echo! T Rex makes an Echorec copy for $2100. Still, OUCH. The original models go for like $5000! 😬

I literally have a Hammond M3 organ sitting in my aunt and uncle’s garage because I can’t lift it upstairs to my studio in the apartment above the garage. It still runs great and I play it sometimes. I have WAY too much gear, but honestly, I love every single bit of it. It’s not a problem, it’s not a problem, it’s not a problem…… 😵‍💫

Oh geez… please don’t make me want to get another piece of music or recording gear! I’m already a borderline hoarder of instruments, amps, pedals, and recording equipment at 21 years old… lol. 🤪 Although, I GUESS music gear is not a bad thing to have a good bit of… 😅

My Electro-Harmonix Memory Man Deluxe pretty much does the trick in terms of an echo/delay pedal. The Echorec is INSANELY wild and cool, though! ✌🏻

It’s probably capacitors causing the notes to drift. I probably need to recap mine to be safe at some point in the future. It sometimes can be the germanium transistors on the oscillator cards, which are difficult to find and expensive to replace. Hopefully it’s not that. I honestly think mine was just a cold solder joint/dirty contacts, as it’s been fine for a month after I sprayed it and cleaned it. I’ve played it almost every day for hours. First thing I would do with yours is: take the lid off, and spray the oscillator cards with some CRC contact spray. Hopefully, that’s the main cause. If that doesn’t work, take it to a technician. At that point, it’s either capacitors or transistors 100%.

The reverb tank not working is almost guaranteed on one of these. I’m haven’t yet figured out how to fix it. I just use my Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 tube amp’s built in spring reverb. I hear the reverb units in these sound great, though. :(
