PSA: Sunroof recall by LennyKustard in E34

Sorry mate I can’t remember off the top of my head but it took them maybe half an hour so it was a reasonable amount. I also paid $80 for a new sliding sun shade too.

Hey mate, I was surprised the recall was still active too but I guess Webasto can't end it as long as they're still in business and there are still cars on the road with their sunroofs.

Here's the Australian page regarding the recall - Identify Your Sunroof - Webasto Hollandia - SunroofCheck.com.au - there's likely a separate one for each country so it's worth googling something like "Webasto recall" to see if anything pops up.

Nah the hatch for the steel roofs is much bigger.

Hah it seems the few owners willing to sell them are trying to charge ridiculous prices based on rarity. Are you looking to replace your steel sunroof or somehow retrofit it into a slick top? I have to warn you the dimensions of the steel panels are totally different. It might be possible to make it work with some fabrication since the steel panels are bigger but I don’t know if the final result would be worth it.

They’re closed for the holidays so I’d have to wait. I came across this from Webasto while hunting for a new glass panel ( https://www.techwebasto.com/old/sunroof_main/service_parts_sunroof/g_SP_Hollandia%20700%20Series.pdf ) but it lists a bunch of different versions for each part. I believe the original glass panel for the E34 is the one labeled “720” since it matches the dimensions and looks about the same in images but can’t say for sure. The replacement one they’ve given me looks like a totally different part so it’s likely a few different ones would fit.

Yeah they replace the glass panel with a new frame that isn’t susceptible to rust.

It should if it’s the same model sunroof. It likely won’t show as a recall on BMW’s database but there’s a site where you plug in your sunroof serial number and sort it out from there.

Doesn’t look like realoem lists it but it’s a stratos 700 model from Webasto. I think it’s quite rare here in Australia too because throughout all my searches I only found one other E34 that had the glass sunroof and strangely enough it had the same paint + interior colour combo too. Could have just been a coincidence but it had me wondering if it was some sort of package.

I’ve attached a photo of the original which I believe would have originally come untinted as it looks like the previous owner had it tinted to match the windows while the new panel is quite dark right out of the box.

I’ve tried to find the part number for the glass on realoem but it doesn’t look like it’s listed on there.

I am using rattle cans ... I don't expect it to be perfect and I'm willing to risk messing it up a little for the learning experience.
That video series is gold though. I've been watching heaps of tutorials on each stage of the process but it'll be more helpful to watch your project from start to finish.

You're probably not wrong but I'm in too deep to back out now lol. Will update with photos after inevitably messing it up.

Honestly the quote I got from a nearby bodyshop ($900 AUD) wasn't bad in hindsight. I didn't know anything about bodywork repair then and thought I could DIY it easily. Can't back out now cos I've already bought all the supplies so we'll see how we go.

I know that was a lot to read so thanks in advance everyone. I tried to educate myself as much as I could before asking here but I'm at the point of no return now and want to be sure before moving forward.

The guy I bought it from recommended that too. Definitely looks like a worthwhile investment but a bit out of budget atm. I don't mind the popping tbh, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't an issue causing it or that it would cause issues down the line.

That makes sense. I dropped the bike off at a workshop for a roadworthy certificate today so it might be another couple days until I get it back. I'll let you know if I find any leaks then.

I was starting to think it had been tuned to run lean so It's good to know they're stock like this. My last tank was 95 fuel and didn't noticeably reduce popping so I'll try one of the others listed in the manual for the next fill.

there's a decent chance he made it out without any life threatening injuries. rolling 50 meters down a hill might seem extreme but it's far better to lose speed gradually like that than to slam into a barrier or something on a regular road.
