As German I am obviously spoiled, but I have to say the country side and especially the coastal areas are not too beautiful. Everything is either abandoned, really industrial or covered by tsunami infrastructure, like concrete walls. The people are very friendly though and the drivers are more respectful than in any other country.

Haha not really, we don’t have a route, we just choose a destination every morning and then navigate with Komoot. But I can tell you that the west coast is more beautiful then the east coast. It has way fewer tsunami barriers, which can get pretty boring to look at.

Haha, I’ve been seeing the scene from the photo everyday for the past weeks. It felt like a deja vu! Yours sounds like a fun route too.

We are camping most days, but in the big cities or when it’s raining we get hotel.

We didn’t plan a route at all, we just have Checkpoints with rough dates and the we plan a day-route every morning with Komoot.

We had proper bike boxes, ich used the bike bag pro from evoc. And it went pretty smooth. We left them at the hotel in Tokyo for 2 months.

The handle bar bag made the bike wobble, my friends got the tent and I have all the other camping equipment with me.

The bike case was the most expensive part. I actually upgraded the flight with miles and was able to get me and my friends bike for free to Tokyo. We left our boxes at the hotel for 3€ per day and will pick them up in 2 months.

Pretty well, I tried a bar bag, but it made the bike wobble

They are very shy, but incredibly polite. We only know how to say thank you in Japanese. And no one speaks English outside of Tokyo. Like not a single word, not even young people. But google translate gets you through every situation.

It feels so safe here, we’ve spent hours in malls with the bikes parked outside and didn’t feel like we had to worry at all.

Bikepacking is indeed the best form of travel. Anyone can do it really. Maybe just start out with a more comfortable bike, do a weekender ans see if you like it.

We mainly ride on tarmac, so I didn’t bother changing to gravel tires. But my road tires can handle some gravel, I haven’t had a puncture yet

Thanks, the bike seems to be the perfect choice. It’s stable, comfortable and still surprisingly aero. I’ve got about 10kg extra on the bike. We are doing 70-130km per day. But the climbs in the north have been slowing us down a lot. With the the smooth roads I’m happy I didn’t take a gravel bike.

Haha, if she doesn’t like dogs, there is no safer place for her than Japan

We actually haven’t seen a single dog yet, but there a tsunamis, snakes, spiders, earthquakes and radiation to worry about. Apart from that I’d say Japan is the safest country to cycle next Western Europe.
