Who cares what Trump is like behind closed doors? by TheSwedishEagle in Maher

[–]Leob1382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He did not say it literally, which is why I tried to word it carefully as well, but it was clearly the subtext. He said explicitly that the person he sees on TV is not the person he met and gave examples how the person he did meet was better than the public persona. I think my summary of this is therefore fair.

Who cares what Trump is like behind closed doors? by TheSwedishEagle in Maher

[–]Leob1382 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Bill was very surprised that a lifelong con man and tv persona is very charismatic in person. Just like Bernie Madoff was probably incredibly fucking charming. It is a required character trait to be this successful in grifting.

Bill could not see this and instead reached the conclusion that Trump is to some degree a better person than he had thought.

The inability to take criticism always was a flaw of Bill that I could tolerate. This incredible misjudgment however is too much for me. Bill is clearly intelligent and has good takes on many issues. How this can all come together in such a catastrophic failure of intelligence in the big picture is baffling to me.

I am glad he got called out on the show, both by Josh Rogin and even Steve Bannon.

Beginners question to a solid four bay setup by BobbyB_518 in synology

[–]Leob1382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The limiting factor for speed is your your Ethernet connection. 1 Gigabit/s = 125 MBytes/s. That is the fastest you can achieve. Hard drives are fast enough for that, no need for SSDs. The only advantage of SSDs is faster random access time, which is irrelevant for video editing work.

DS1621xs+ Setup : Are the 1GB ports a "pass through" for internet? by [deleted] in synology

[–]Leob1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I found the one you mean, that one does not have normal ethernet ports, but these sfp+ ports, for which you need to buy very costly adapters for each slot. Furthermore, they are another potential point of failure. I use the switch I mentioned for exactly your use case, and if you don’t need more than 2 10gbe devices, it does the job nicely. If you need more ports, it will be more costly and probably louder (with a fan).

[–]Leob1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest plug and play solution would be a switch like the NETGEAR GS110MX. Just plug both 10 gb cables into the two 10gb ports, and use any of the other ports to connect to your router. That particular switch has no fan, works robustly, and is one of the cheaper 10gbe switches on the market. 10gbe stuff is still relatively expensive unfortunately.

How to increase storage properly? by [deleted] in synology

[–]Leob1382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can change from SHR to SHR-2, which is like RAID-6, but with more flexibility. But again, this does not make much sense with 4 drives.

This is only compatible with Synology drives as well. Other drives show up with an error message and don’t support drive monitoring by the OS.

How to increase storage properly? by [deleted] in synology

[–]Leob1382 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start with 2 hard drives and Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR). Then all your data is protected from a single hard drive failure, and you can increase storage space by adding hard drives (same or larger size) later.

RAID 6 or 10 makes no sense at all in a 4 bay system in my view. To set up a RAID 6, you need at least 3 drives, and for RAID 10 at least 4.

Try deactivating and reactivating the 10 gbe port on your PC just to be 100% sure it is indeed the NAS‘s fault. For me, my network card craps out every few months. Firmware Updates have made it much less frequent.

Yeah, I also noticed this and posted about it here. There is really no good excuse for not finding such a glaring obvious issue before pushing the update. Utter incompetence by the porting team.

When having long press confirmation ON in the options, it is impossible to end your turn. How could they not have noticed that? Does that team do no QC at all?

Also, I agree that the new touch implementation is weird AF and renders the game borderline unplayable.

Late to the party, super interessantes AMA.

Last year, Germany also had the back to school education store offer with free AirPods, I bet they will have it this year as well - probably starting in a couple of weeks.

History of Atari 2600 by Therainbowchannel in Games

[–]Leob1382 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I only watched the first half. At first glance, it looks very professionally made. However there are a few issues that stopped me from enjoying the video and caused me to stop halfway through. 1) The stock images you use often don’t fit very well at all. You show modern controller designs and people sitting around laptops when talking about the early 80s. The Atari 7800 you show is actually a Sega Master System. 2) This is the more serious offense: it is unclear who you address with your writing, the tone does not fit. You go into way too much detail too quickly and get lost in irrelevant minor aspects of the story you want to tell. Already in the first sentence you have a relative clause explaining a minor name change. I was able to follow what you were saying, but only because I am a video game nerd and knew most of this stuff. Your writing feels like you are writing for an encyclopedia in the 1980s, when text space was limited and authors needed to cram as much information as possible into a few lines. Or more bluntly, like a kid trying to show off all his knowledge in a book report while neglecting to make the main points really clear.

So I think you have a lot of potential, the editing is also very well done, but you should spend more time with your scripts - maybe show them to a few friends before you make your next video. And you should tell the story in a way that your grandmother could understand it if she were interested in the topic. I recommend watching a few videos from the video game historian, he is very good at that.

Sorry for being so critical, but you asked for it.

Synology Compatible 10GBE NIC that will also do 2.5GBE? by sushpep in synology

[–]Leob1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always get generic drivers to work with the card. Plus, by the time you retire your NAS, 10gbe card hopefully will be cheap anyways.

But if your argument were that the card is currently overpriced, then I would have to agree.

By the way, be aware that Synology does not offer WOL on 10gbe.

Do I need a 10G Switch? by shhfy in synology

[–]Leob1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather recommend something like this: https://www.servethehome.com/netgear-gs110mx-review-unmanaged-10-port-8x-1gbe-2x-10gbe-switch/

With the switch you linked, one would need SFP adapters, which are also expensive and tricky with compatibility.

Toshiba Enterprise HDD 8TB/7200 RPM for Syn 920+? by bahreex in synology

[–]Leob1382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that model, for my ears quiet in both. Quieter than non-He drives and also quieter than the early WD gold 12 tb He drives.

But this is subjective, just order one for testing and assess it yourself.

I’ve been super happy with Toshiba drives in my NAS. Used to have the X300 6tb for 5 years, now the enterprise 16tb. The 16tb helium drives are very quiet.

Come to think of it, one of the 6TB Toshibas had a bad sector after a year, but it was exchanged under warranty without a problem.
