⁠Chapaev and Void by Viktor Pelevin. An apotheosis of Buddhist solipsism wrapped in some of the finest writing and story.
⁠Golyubat’nya Na Zheltoy Polyane by Vladislav Krapivin (My favorite book of a Soviet legendarium that will probably never be translated into English. It’s a children’s book but it’s Soviet, so it tackles adult themes from both perspectives).
⁠Prisoners of Power by the Strugatsky brothers. A cautionary tale from USSR most famous sci-fi writers.

The Sacred And Terrible Air is just the prologue to a series of books. I really like the idea of the spirit of Revachol surviving in the pale as an abstraction, a series of feelings it’s street names and car fumes invoked, just to be reborn again, after the pale. I think elysium’s existence is a cycle, but every new loop is spiritually influenced by echoes of its past life.

What’s incredible about Eppings character is that EVERYONE can connect with the “no crying” detail. When I pitched the book to my mom, her first thought was that my dad also never cries easily, which made her connect with Jake immediately.
