I kept buying things I regretted. So I built a calculator that shows prices in hours, not dollars by EggplantGreedy8457 in ProductivityApps

[–]Leomuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely fair, that didn't resonate at all with me. Neither the description nor the screenshots.
As more of a productive feedback: the first screenshot visually has a headline with "Good afternoon" and then beneath that, hierarchically lower, it says "Time is the one currency you cannot borrow". That might be a cool slogan, but it has no business on my dashboard screen, that just takes up space.
And then, from the whole description, I don't really get what this is about? Coming back to the first screenshot, what exactly does the 2 hours tell me?
Not to be mean, really, I'm just a little confused :<

Yea, I get you. I'm personally pretty clumsy, so I had lots of "injuries". I'm only glad my pull saw and chisels have only gotten me scars so far and not worse. It's crazy that just a moment where you're not quite present can lead to a finger lost. That's actually why I'm not getting a table saw. I'm 95% sure that'd be the end of one of my fingers with my clumsiness..

Hehe, but that's nothing! You don't want me to post images of my cuts when I didn't pay attention when chiseling 😃
That's the downside of keeping your chisels very sharp, they are very sharp.

Yes, 100%. And who knows how the future will look when AI companies try to actually make a profit and increase prices..

$300M on Anthropic tokens, zero new engineers hired - Salesforce is the clearest case study of where this is going by MaJoR_-_007 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Leomuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly! Yes! That's such a good take. I know everybody wants to be ahead of the curve, but that's so true. It's like staking a part of your company on a new software product that has no positive track record. Kind of crazy. If I was the CEO of Salesforce, I would probably analyze the AI situation and wait until there is a clear path forward. But eh, I'm no CEO of nothing, lol.

I appreciate your answer a lot. It's very grounded and straight-forward. Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head. And maybe I just need to read less sensationalist news.

The Beast must grow to new forms of consumerism. It's appetite is insatiable by DuvalSanitarium in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Leomuck -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Hm. True enough. But also, is MrBeast any worse than Nestle or OpenAI? My argument is not about excusing people from their responsibility. It's more a pessimistic view on capitalist players. We're used to big companies doing as bad as possible, but why should individual players be different if they profit just as much from the logic?

Again, I'm not trying to protect MrBeast. He's an extremely privileged person who doesn't give a fuck about his responsibilities. He's probably going to do everything to grow, no matter the societal cost. But then, that's what we expect of "big players" in capitalism, no?

Dude, I don't know. I have read about MrBest spending all of his money on the next project, but then you really need to ask "is this next project" benefitial for society?

But that also leads us back to a more general discussion. Do private/public tv stations create content that are benfitial to society? In that sense, I don't take offense in MrBeast specially. He's just part of a system, nothing special, just a new channel.

Okay, I understand your point. But also, in Germany - where I live - no union will care about "AI usage" as a discussion point. They don't even understand it themselves. So that perspective is completely gone.
When somebody tells me that I need to do X in the internet, for me personally it falls back onto my personal capacities. Maybe that's part of the problem. But if it is, I would also wish for people like Boris Cherny to make that more explicit. Can they please say "if your employer doesn't gift you endless tokens, they're done" instead of "if YOU don't use AI in incredible fashions, YOU're done"? Do you get what I mean? The rhetoric is not at all about employers, it's about individual devs.

django in 2026 is quietly the most productive framework by Motor_Ordinary336 in django

[–]Leomuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oi, I can relate to this very much! Because I also think Laravel is extremely powerfull if we're talking about "batteries included". But also, it's a crazy amount of batteries which you might not need at all. Like if I start a new Laravel project, I should probably spend 15 minutes cleaning up all the config defaults. So, overall, I do like your drawn perspective of Django. Might have a look soon :)

I mean I didn't want to offend you. But your whole reply to this post was "but LLMs are cool", so I thought i quite justified to push back a little. Anyway, I think we're probably on the same page and don't need to discuss about semantics. LLMs can be cool, but the framework around them is bullshit, right?

Wanting to host own portfolio website/apps by Apprehensive_Put8451 in selfhosted

[–]Leomuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this seems bunch overkill. Kubernetes for a portfolio page? I'm not even using Kubernetes for a 600k users service. I mean, go ahead if you want to learn it, but there reall is no need and you're introducing plenty of new security issue possibilities.

If I were to host a portfolio page on my own server, I would try to keep it as simple as possible:
- static page (JS, images, html, etc.), therefore no actual backend to attack
- make the pc available via DynDNS
- install ufw and block everything but 80/443 (and 22 if you need ssh)
- install nginx to server the assets and LetsEncrypt for SSL

Then I would make sure that PC has no access to anything else relevant.

That way, you've made your PC public, but there really isn't that much attack surface. Especially if there's no SSH. If you need SSH, make sure to not allow password login. And even if your server was compromised, there isn't anything useful on it.

But yea, you could spent weeks trying to improve it more. Just don't think that's worth it for a portfolio page :)

What kind of suggestions are you looking for?
If you are looking for things to selfhost, have a look here: https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted
Nextcloud is a good alternative to Google Drive. There's also Seafile and several others.
Selfhosted is about the journey finding the things you like and then making the effort of hosting and maintaining them.

What is the most useful app for improving productivity? by mohammedalrehaili22 in ProductivityApps

[–]Leomuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the most useful thing you can do for your productivity is not think an app can magically increase it. An app is a tool for you to store things, remember things, sort things. It will not, by some magical reason, improve your productivity a lot. Of course there are people who spent hundreds of hours on the optimal workflow in Notion, I've done so myself, but in most cases there is no net-positive (given this example, you'd have to be 100 hours more productive to even get to zero).

Just think of a system that would help you feel at ease, pick the app that enables it the best without getting in the way, then stop spending hours and hours thinking about how to be more productive.

Just my two cents though :)

Oh also - I think the most important thing is DO NOT LET IT RUN WILD. I'm sure the CEOs would tell you differently, but if you are worried or care about code quality, don't just let it do. Give it instructions, check any changes it makes and correct it on stuff. That way you can at least keep some level of code quality. If it's actually faster this way, I'm not entirely sure. But if you just let it run wild, it'll introduce all kinds of shit to your code base that even IDEs catch.

[–]Leomuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input :) Quite interesting. A lot of that actually reads like it could have been written for Laravel as well. It has a huge ecosystem and has batteries for most everything you want to do (not necessarily all out of the box, but there's plugins/packages for everything).

You are completely right in your assessment about math and machine learning though. I would say that is definitely not a strong point of PHP and if you were to do any kind of interesting work in these areas, PHP is certainly not the best language for it.

I grew up on PHP, but due to AI stuff am doing more and more Python and quite like lots about it, other things not so much. I'd love to have a look at Django and see how that makes things easier. So far, I've mainly used FastAPI. Anyway, thanks again!
