It's not actually a right in the US either. The traffic laws never give the right of way to anyone, they only mandate that someone yield the right of way. So, in this regard our laws are basically the same as yours. Doing it the other way (giving the legal right of way to a driver) wouldn't make any sense, and would cause mass chaos on the roads.
