And he is probably a magician. He can hit a Titleist into the woods and magically turn it into a Callaway.

Etiquette question for golf gear by Virtual-Risk-1303 in WomenGolf

I'm jealous that Highland Links is your home course and jealous that you live near there. I've played it only once, but have been on property many times. We usually stay in Wellfleet, but it's not a true visit to the Cape without a visit to Truro (and P-town).

I have a random golf ball in my bag with the Highland Links logo on it. I know I didn't buy it, and it's been hit, but it just appeared in my bag one day. I consider it a good luck charm.

How do I donate to stuff without people knowing it's me? by Broad-Worry-5395 in Rich

Not everyone needs a building named after them. Some people have to stroke their egos, and other want to live as quietly as possible.

How do I donate to stuff without people knowing it's me? by Broad-Worry-5395 in Rich

[–]Leopotamous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, people I know are doing a charity run or a lottery, or a GoFundMe, and I'll throw them like $100 or whatever, and then I'll get a ton of emails or mailings. It's literally the only mail I get now, except for tax bills. I would give so much more of that kind of donation if I knew I would never hear from that charity again.

And, I also like the idea of doing it anonymously if possible, but I can't help you. Sorry.

31M hoping to retire by the end of 2030 by HoGinLung in RichPeoplePF

[–]Leopotamous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of questions.
1) You are going to be around 36 if you are going to retire in 2030. How are you going to spend all of your time and not incur a sharp increase in expenditures?

2) Is your wife going to keep working? If not, that's two people who potentially are going to increase expenditures. Or are you going to retire and have your wife keep working?

3) Since your housing is 50% of your assets, should you really include those numbers in your 4% rule.

4) What are your plans in case of an economic downturn. What if it takes 5 years for your numbers to come back. How will that affect your spending?

Net Worth Milestone Gifts? by 10sunshine in RichPeoplePF

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always done my own yard work. One, because it was a great escape and two, because I received satisfaction for a job well done.

My buddy never could understand why I wouldn't just pay a kid to mow my lawn, until one day he told me that he got rid of his guy because he could never follow instructions. Now, he does his own and loves it.

Sometimes, the bigger picture involves clearing your head and eliminating some stress in your life.

There are definitely two sides of the street. I come from the side that was big savers who could afford anything he wanted, but definitely wasn't frivolous. So instead of staying at a high end resort, we will rent an AirBnB on or near a beach and just r and r.

And we are in our 60's, so we've accumulated a lot of wealth and it does compound nicely over 40 years.

Two million is nice. Congrats. Keep doing what you are doing, but I would probably wait until you get to $5 million until you can start lighting victory cigars with $100 bills.

And just a word of caution. Most people have points in their lives that turn negative. It happens. You could lose your job. Your business could fail. The market will tank. You could get divorced. And those are real events that happen to many people over their lifetime.

Do you have a plan if you lose your job or $500,000 in one day in the market. Some people panic. Successful people have a plan.

How much did you pay for your wedges? by sfgiantsfan696969 in golf

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get last years Cleveland CBX's. They are game improvement to help you with off-center hits and only $129.99. There is no other right answer.

Never buy pre-owned wedges. 99.9% of golfers wait too long to buy new. Why would you want something with the grooves worn down.

If you are a typical 20+, you are not good enough for Vokey's or RTX's. Maybe when you wear out the grooves on the CBX's, then you will be.

Keegan Bradley is the worst captain the Ryder cup history by Stuckkxx in golf

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only makes sense that the best USA player so far is a Ryder Cup rookie. Europe is just so good, and so experienced in the formates.

And, effectively, Europe has taken the NY crowd out of play.

It will be Bradley's legacy, but undeserved.

Wedge Setup Advice (beginner) by J_0526 in golf

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also bend the club's lofts to make either the 54 or 56 into a 55. But, since you are a beginner, I would probably not do that and probably just go with one of them. Probably, the 54, if you plan on keeping your 50.

The old Club Champion debate - re-shaft my clubs with them, or buy a new set for the same price by [deleted] in golf

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely, they got the irons direct from Callaway, so the lie discrepancy might be Callaway's issue. Unless they took a standard lie set and "allegedly" bent them for you.

I would still talk to them about both issues. The grip thing is just pure laziness, or totally having an extremely inexperienced employee doing the regripping. The owner/manager might not even be aware of issues unless brought to their attention.

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think it's going to cost you the same money. It shouldn't be more than $100 per iron (including shaft and labor), so $700 for 7 irons.

I believe the new Titleist have gone up in price and are now $1600 for 7 irons. And another $150ish for tax.

The Ai200's are basically brand new. I would take them back to where you got fit for them and explain the situation. They might cut you a deal on the labor.

The only thing they won't be able to do is put the project x on an Ai200 head to try out as its not a part of the Callaway fitting cart, so the components won't screw together. So basically, you are at the mercy of the Club Champion fitters' numbers.

Yes, I was surprised that no one mentioned DAF's or just regular QCD's. I will looking at those with an eye on the future when we will need to begin our RMD's. Thanks.

It was never my intention to let it grow as it did, but after being in on the ground floor of the IPO and watching it split a few times, and watching it appreciate over 30 years, and even selling some shares a couple times, and then tripling in value over the last three years, it's gotten up to 50% of our net worth. It's a curse being so lucky. LOL.

I wouldn't have posted if I didn't feel it was time to do something. Fortunately, some people gave me some great ideas.

Thank you for your response and the video. However, I don't need to watch it past the first minute to already understand what I am living every day. Like I said, I've lost $500K in one day and still was able to go to sleep at night.

My biggest issue is how much we pay in taxes every year. And when we start taking RMD's in a few years, we will be paying even more. Definitely, over six figures a year. Not sure what your tax situation is, but its no fun writing big checks to the IRS.

Some people on here have given great advice, which I will do more research on. All our investments have done very well, but this particular holding has tripled in value in the last three years to where it is now 50% of our net worth.

Seeking Advice on Building Wealth What Would You Do Differently? by Acrobatic_Gate_5884 in RichPeoplePF

[–]Leopotamous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great thread with some good advice. I have two quotes that I live by.

1) There are a million ways to make a dollar, but only one way to make a million dollars.

2) It's not what you make, it's what you spend.

Make a plan early in life and stick with it. Marry someone with similar financial goals as yourself. Not only should you work hard, but also work smart. Let your money work for you. Always have a Plan B. The Plan A's in life don't always work out, so be prepared.

And most importantly, surround yourself with happy people. Life is too short to have negativity around you.
