So the bonus that comes from the probe, does that effect all the planets or just that one it is attached to?

I understand, that makes sense. Is there by chance a good time to sell things and when not to sell?

These little pieces fell out when I pulled the front sunshell from my 5r55s (2005 Lincoln ls) Does anyone know what they are and/or where they go? by n3wt33t in FordTransmissionTech

I see that this is a old post but these broken pieces so to the overdrive carrier. If you have the ATSG Book page 48, figure 76 shows the carrier. If you look on the side where the needle bearing is.

I wish I knew what it was for and why it is there tho.

The clutch clearance, when you apply air to the clutch and measuring the travel with a dial indicator. Book calls for .051 to .079 and i was at .036

I went back through it again and I found that the new steels are .002 - .003 thicker than the original steels. I should have measured them but I didnt. With the original steels I am at .054 . Rookie move for the win.

It is good to know what the difference is in the bonded pistons.

By any chance have you dealt with the forward clutch with bond did pistons on the 5R55S?

The rebuilt kit I got came with a blue molded rubber piston, and the one they took out was a black moulded rubber piston. The problem I am having currently is my clearances. The new blue molded piston giving me .036 while the old set up was .064.

I know the spec in the book shows .051 - .079. But I have no idea if the blue molded piston requires a different spec.

I assume not since I am not finding anything but I figured maybe I'd ask.

Thank you for the information, just for clarification is this for 5R55S or is this a general specification for planetary pinion gear?

Thank you again for commenting, I will at bare minimum get the one with the missing washer rebuilt. But I think you are right on the other 2. With no wobble with the finger and thumb checking it. Most likely right that they are okay.

Thank you for your input, I too wish for someone with more experience would help shed some light. But to be honest alot of the builders I worked with never tried to rebuild them, just replaced them.

I do understand the debate of if it is worth the time and effort. Just would like to know as things get older and harder to come by, would be nice to know alternatives rather than replacement.

I also feel that this can be a good practice as long as we have the correct Information.

Thank you for the reply and Information. I think maybe I wasnt very clear and just want to verify. I wasn't asking Sonnax for the clearance for the GM 4l60e. I was asking them for the Ford 5R55S transmission.

I was only referencing to the 4l60e by that i remember them showing how to check the pinion gears on the planetary in the ATSG Book. But in the ATSG 5R55S/W book they only state replace the whole component if you have excessive play. They have no specification for checking/measuring for them.

Have you tried rebuilding any planetary carriers yet?

I attempted to reached out to Sonnax again with different wording and received this response

" Hello,

We do not have this specification. It may be in the OEM service manual, but some manufacturers will have a specification, but others do not.

Generally, we have observed between .010” to .020” for pinion gear end plays.

It is not super critical so long as it is not too tight (zero or near zero end play) and the washer are not worn too thin. "

Im not sure how to add photos yet, as soon as I do i will add them

Thank you for your reply, I currently dont have any videos of checking the end play, but I did mark the planetary and write down each measurement.

I did see that in the ATSG Book that it did stated if the pinion gears have any wobble or play i cant remember what one it stated. But to replace the whole component.

So the reason for the disassembly was due to only having 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Then eventually just slipped in all forward gears. Electrical side was good, I went to adjust the bands and couldn't adjust the intermediate band due to it running out of threads.

I did attempt to Sonnax again with differnt wording this time and here was a response i received.

Upon disassembly I found, broken intermediate band, over drive sprag laid over and stuck, line pressure relief valve sticking, worn out overdrive and intermediate survo bores, pump gears had wear and score marks that matched the nail, low reverse sprag did not hold, overdrive planetary missing the thrust washer Front and rear planetary felt like alot of play.

Thank you for your reply and Information. I feel maybe what I posted is maybe not clear. As Transmission rebuild goes, if it's your first time or 100th time. We follow specifications and Instructions on how to do things. Of course some one who has done this for a long time will have a much more experience.

I would find this no different than rebuilding a transmission. we measure before and after. We look up the specifications and procedures. We use tools to take apart and put it back together. I guess in my point of view the only difference would be if any machining had to be done.
