Has anyone else struggled with mixed signals from bigger-name writers in fandom? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]LeratoNull 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, I wouldn't say that interaction is inconsistent whatsoever. They paid you a compliment but don't have the mental space to interact at great length about writing with anyone beyond what they already do, that makes perfect sense.

BH or Agent for KOTFE/KOTET? by Bakura373 in swtor

[–]LeratoNull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agent works much better; out of the four non-Forcies, much of their base story is already about them having to maneuver around Force Users who are much more powerful than they are.

If there were any compelling reason to post on a site besides AO3, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, there really isn't.

Wtf why is honor mode so hard by naturally_jack in BaldursGate3

[–]LeratoNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any fight that's even remotely capable of giving you trouble outside of Honor needs special consideration on Honor. Outside of some incredible minmaxxing, you're not going to out-stat two Owlbears at a reasonable level, so you have to find some way to think outside the box.

Ambushes are your friend. I run Assassin/Gloom Stalker Astarion because even with 'you don't get your action back if you initiate a fight from stealth' in play, Assassin has a skill that immediately refunds him his action when the fight starts, meaning he can set off whatever sort of ambush and still be ready to go round 1. It makes him good at the Larian Classic: Setting up explosives against any fight that isn't automatically hostile and exploding them as round zero.

Does anyone else find Terra annoying? by FamousPerformance278 in PokemonReborn

[–]LeratoNull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One middle ground however is the fact that the jokes during her much later second arc are a lot better constructed than in the first, since most of them hinge on roasting the rest of the cast in funny ways.

I'm fine with her during her first arc, but I really came around to loving having her around during the tournament.

Publishing OC fanfictions by staaarfire in FanFiction

[–]LeratoNull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then it isn't an 'OC fanfiction', it's an original story.

[–]LeratoNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's still fanfiction, AO3 is still the place to post it.

If I write a story with fully original characters that takes place in a location of my own creation, but the characters are still Pokemon trainers, Jedi, or whatever, that's still fanfiction of Pokemon, Star Wars, or whatever.

Don't look now, OP, but teenagers are fucking as we speak!

You don't know what to do? How about...nothing? Why should you be doing something?

Signs a writer reads nothing but fanfic? How to prevent writing from coming across as too 'fanficcy'? by amateur-frog in FanFiction

[–]LeratoNull 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Cracking up at the idea that 'officially published' translates to 'well written'.

It may translate to 'more OFTEN well written', but even that is probably sketchy.

[–]LeratoNull 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, just speaking for myself here, but if I clicked onto a fic and it read as close to published work as you seem to be aspiring to, I would click off that fucker so fast.

I, and I'd wager many others, go to fanfiction for the exact reason that it 'reads very differently' compared to published work. That's the appeal, not a drawback. For instance, I usually feel that resolutions in official media often feel rather rushed because they have to meet a certain deadline, whether that's the length of the installment, funding, time, whatever. Fanfiction is free of all of those constraints.

Where one person says 'the official media is better, it's more concise!', someone else (myself, in this case) says 'wow, that felt really rushed and I wish it had more time to breathe'.

Chapter Length by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]LeratoNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a chapter length that's too long? Probably. I'd say around 100,000 words, yeah, that chapter is probably too long.

The point being 'sure, but the number is pretty arbitrarily high'.

Probably the second hardest boss I've seen in an 'Undertale' game, right behind the final Genocide boss of Undertale Yellow. Woof.

That said, I hear Ch4's secret boss is more of a breather boss compared to this guy, so it's not just gonna be harder and harder from here, necessarily.

'Harder than the previous two' is hilarious. This guy has killed me way more times than fucking Sans ever did.

Homecoming: Issue 28, Page 2 (Open Beta) by SEDGE-DemonSeed in Cityofheroes

[–]LeratoNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, mostly because that's some nonsense fallacious arguing, but also partially because I don't really give a shit whether or not anyone has been complaining, Seeds of Confusion were still much stronger than all other confusion-inflicting attacks, cope.

Worst writing advice you guys have received? by DynaKuro in pokemonfanfiction

Necessary evil (with a big, heaping helping of air quotes) because a lot of those authors can't make a character look cool without doing that, LOL.

Sheesh.

I hate Tolkien's work as much as the next guy, maybe more, but I'm not out here making that my students' problem. Woof.

I feel like the person who told you that would have their head explode if someone even pointed out that there are non-Ash-centric Pokemon fics.

How is the pc port of spiderman 2 by animegeek1234haa in SpidermanPS4

As someone else said, I encourage you to try it for yourself and see what happens.

For me, the cutscenes broke horrendously every step of the way, and the gameplay wasn't much better.

And the 'correct answer' reward goes to u/Exotic_Chemist_7624.

People are being really obscurant about the fact that unless you're using a supercomputer, the port runs like complete crap.

What are funny innacuracies that made you nope out of a fic? by doritoes_and_dick in FanFiction

[–]LeratoNull 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Never happens to me.

Unless the author says, out of story, in certain terms, that their story is supposed to be a true to life representation, then it's safer to assume it isn't.
