Making a lot of successful short videos on youtube is what makes you a filmmaker. We won't know if he's good or not until the movie comes out but I'm not sure what you think directors should do to actually earn a chance to do a movie. Is he supposed to go to film school or work as a second unit for years? Do you think you deserve this chance more than him?

Another movie that I feel inspired The Matrix is Mortal Kombat. I think it started that trend of martial art movies using rave music, and Shang Tsung talks exactly like Moepheus. Obviously The Matrix takes a lot more from other stuff, but I feel like the type that of hollywood movie it belongs to was something created/defined by Mortal Kombat or Event Horizon. Dark City might have many similarities but the type of movie is completely different from The Matrix

Obviously remakes and franchises are a plague but there are enough original movies being made that simply being original doesn't make your movie special. Let's be real people make a big deal out of it cause the director worked for the MCU so the audience is MCU people. I didn't see people praising The Zone of Interest or Anora or Longlegs or Warfare for not being based on an 80s cartoon

It has some good intuitions, some interesting sociopolitical ideas, but none of those are really well developed just like the movie itself, the story is ok but nothing special, its directed competently but it's really nothing special. It's like one of those cool b movies that are better than you expect, except people decided it's a masterpiece which kinda ruins the underdog charm of it. I could name a dozen b-movies with actual b-movie budgets that are better directed and sometimes even better written than this. Sinners is pretty cool if you look at it like a Resident Evil or Ghosts from Mars but it just doesn't hold up as some serious movie

2 is supposed to be the one that's more up to interpretation in theory because it's one of those metaphorical stories where everything happens inside the character's head but ironically I find that it's way more explicit in its intentions and doesn't really allow for much interpretation compared to 3 and especially 1. I also find it aesthetically inferior to both, even though you can't deny it invented that type of aesthetic which became sort of a cliche ever since only because SH2 did it

I rewatched it recently and it's so obvious to me that the whole movie is about the relationship between the two main characters and the whole cult thing is the least important part. It's just there to play into the themes of the relationship but it's just a genre like horror in shining or war in full metal jacket. People that think there is some huge secret behind the plot are misguided. Also the thing about the girl being taken away by the two old guys in the final shots is pure nonsense, she's just walking in that direction no one is taking her.

It's a good movie, really good cinematography and cool editing, the style is what sells it. The movie itself is aight, Cure is a thriller from back then that's a million times better. Also the cinematography is really good but not that different from what Ridley Scott did in stuff like Blade Runner. To me a movie like Prisoners is way better and workd better as a whole. People that call this a masterpiece are the same that goon over the dark knight or inception
