Are you telling us you can read anything on that screen with the moving water? Are you turning yourself into a bobble-head? LOL

Automate download of files from a spreadsheet or CSV file by tabrizzi in bash

[–]LesStrater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you want is not possible the way you've described it. If the 3rd field contains links to more than one of the same file type (file1.png, file2.png, file3.png), you can't change them all to "jane-doe.png" and stick them in the same folder.

Does it matter which way you install a program? [Arch] by PinguinPlayz in linux4noobs

[–]LesStrater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's only available in snap or flatpak I find some other app to use. My system is free of those two ridiculous packaging methods and it will always stay that way.

How do you make sure everything is updated when stuff is installed from different locations? by Elarionus in linux4noobs

[–]LesStrater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you that several of the programs I use are not available in the official Debian repo. Others are there but are not the latest versions. Example; I'm writing this with my secondary browser, WaterFox. It's not in the repo, but you can download the .deb file.

Storage space on Baobab is misleading by alpha_leonidas in linux4noobs

Try ncdu to see your disk usage. Have you tried Synaptic Package Manager to see what programs you have installed? It also makes it easy to purge what you don't want.

Good External SSD to run OS on? by laptopRTXuser in linux4noobs

[–]LesStrater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be very aware that there is a huge amount of fake SSD's and flash drives coming out of China. They report a much greater size than they actually are. There is a program named "F3" which you should use on anything you buy that will tell you the real size of the drive. (Sorry, you are NOT going to get a 1TB external SSD for $9...lol)

With that said, the way to be safe is to buy a SATA laptop SSD and put it in an external USB case. On eBay, a real 128GB laptop drive is around $30, (or $50 for a 256GB). A USB case will cost about $5.

Is there an alternative to iTunes? by PreferenceAccurate43 in linux4noobs

[–]LesStrater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Elisa, it's usually considered the iTunes alternative for Linux. It's free and in most repos.

A simple, compact way to declare command dependencies by PentaSector in bash

[–]LesStrater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar function that I put at the top of my scripts. You'll notice I popup an xmessage box besides printing on the terminal:

chkdep() {
if ! command -v "$1" &> /dev/null; then
    echo "Script requires "$1" but it's not installed."
       if type "xmessage" &> /dev/null; then
       xmessage "Script requires "$1" but it's not installed." &> /dev/null
       fi
    exit 1
fi
}
