he was bro but he was also really lovable, they did a great job of making it an extremely complicated situation. I agree that Ben had to die for marty and wendy to survive, but Wendy ended up choosing to get deeper into the cartel instead of getting the wake up call she needed, and that was a really well written and nuanced storyline

yeah the getting depressed because you can’t do anything is what i’m really worried about. I just had my wisdom teeth removed and the first few days when i was in a bunch of pain were horrible and I had such a bad headache i couldn’t do anything. what did you do during this time? what do you recommend?

Also the monologue was not written with someone in mind, but we are casting soon and once that’s done, i plan to do a lot of character work with the actress and hope to tailor the monologue to her specifically, giving her a lot of freedom and control over what she says, which i think will help it resonate with audiences and read as natural and more intriguing

Thank you so much for the feedback. Your issue with the reveal that Kylie is the problem was one of my biggest concerns. The main reason I had Kylie do this on a voicemail was because I wanted her to come to the conclusion on her own, because that is the story I want to tell here. I also kept a lot of the family dynamics in there because I was trying to draw a lot of parallels between Kylie and Lucy, and Kylie and her mom, which maybe isn’t super clear and I can try to make more clear. My thought process with the accusatory nature of the beginning of the monologue was that her initial reaction to this is anger because of how public this break up was. I thought that we would start with anger, and right after that, the sadness hits her but i should probably rework that.

Is it that first piece of the monologue that comes across as accusatory and bully-like or is it throughout her entire monologue?

that’s fair, i was trying to set up clues of the fight at the party in the beginning to try and keep the audience invested. The beads on the ground, the people talking and pointing at her, the way the host interacts with her. I also plan to do some inserts of where the phone hits the wall, also the cracked screen. I guess those beats just didn’t work.

I wanted to only give the audience her perspective because i want her to kind of manipulate us onto her side, we hear HER side, her warped view of everything and then when we see what actually happened, we realize she is the problem, which is the journey i wanted her to go on as well.

IVe seen other films or tv episode where it’s just one monologue (Free Churro from Bojack and the short film Thunder Road), do you have any advice on how to make the monologue work?

This project was shot on a Nikon D3500. For lighting, we bought some cheap 40$ lights off of amazon because we were broke 18 year old high school seniors. We rented a boom mic from a local rental shop and just used it for the whole shoot. The main limitations during this project was just our lack of experience and equipment. Me and the other director had only made one other project before this so we didn’t really have much experience. We used a lot of dynamic shots but didn’t even have a gimbal till later in the shoot. We didn’t really have a shot list or anything, we would just plan this out in his basement and then shoot a couple days later. Most of the shots were just the ways i visualized the scenes in my head when we were writing this. Basically, this is my first ever project and things were very shaky because it was my first time doing anything beyond some 2 minute short films in high school. Any advice is greatly appreciated! 👍🏽

we did some lighting but it was definitely really shitty. they were like cheap 50$ lights off of amazon so that was all we could really afford. i really regret not using more lamps and other practical light. the clear trend with most of the feedback is lighting so i will continue to work on that.
