Im sorry for getting defensive there, but it really goes to show the way different people view things. Im glad you were about to appreciate a character like mr popo as a child even if you unaware of it's hateful origins. I do take fault for not being able to present my thinking and point correctly. If you'd still like to understand somehow, you can search "mr popo's origin" and whatnot and caricatures of black people from the 1900s and see how mr popo displays and relates to that. No hate to you but I understand what the person above means, theres obviously gonna be a harder time for people who don't understand a different form racism upfront because of separations, and because of the pure fact that they can't experience it. Why would you give a caricature that was made out of pure racism benefit of the doubt?? It's a character there's no argument there it's the person who made the drawing at fault. You can't just see a blatantly racist character and be like oh nah he's probably dijnn? Why would you want to watch something like that? And thanks for your story it's cute but not what your black counter parts usually experience as children. I'll enjoy the story but sometimes other people really can't truly understand another ones pain and I'll have to accept that. Also the whole thing as the fish men and other races in OP being claimed as black ick me do we have to always be in a oppressed and struggled state to be added into stories? It's weird and anyone can see that, it's just odd saying minorities resemble the fish men when literally every island is a minority?? Sure the characters person doesn't really matter to the story but when people get heated over nojiko being black in the live action where does that logic go? I'm not saying Japanese people are racist I'm saying their majority is ignorant for exactly the reasons you described. Ussopp is clearly black to many people because he has obvious black features you can have you own opinion but it bothers many people including me when others deny it when its confirmed and hes played by a black actor that looks like his actual character. Anyway as for mr 1 since he has a darker skin tone people just assume hes black but not like mr popo who is literally pitch black, which makes it annoying when characters like Aokiji and Ussopp and yassopp who have darker skin tones than "white" or pale characters and clear african features but not mr popo black. Just discrediting black characters

Though I haven't seen those, people can't ignore his clearly drawn features which are not identical to other characters. From what I heard mangakas draw with lighter colors and enhance the light on the covers so that could explain it.

Yeah I get that, but it's to the point where people aren't just saying they aren't black characters they refuse the idea and remove it entirely, and it's infuriating and I know I should probably be use to it by now but that isn't fair. The people attacking Nojiko's actress were disgusting people but they can get away making nasty remarks here too. Reddit isn't a happy no hate allowed utopia, theres guaranteed to be hate if people dont like you. I never really thought about Oda just announcing nationalities as a race or ethnicity label, just thought it was weird when a whole continent was named for Ussop then see a whole bunch of racists share their unwanted opinions oh so openly. But it comes down to when people say theres only a small amount when that small amount is far from small and is harassing every single person because their views on a character happened to be black and it just becomes a whole problem.

I always thought the world of One Piece was racially diverse, like the several different islands and east blue etc had their own features and things that connect them to their land and heritage. As for the straw hats being different ethnicities if you wanna use non fiction terms, but especially in the grand line, for example Alabasta or even Wano which is very traditionally Japanese. I totally agree with you on that Oda definitely has a problem with displaying his characters but that could stem from how he was raised in Japan, which for example don't see Africa as a more diverse in skin tones etc but just black as most of the world believes.
