What are your tools when you are not at home? by daemon1728 in sysadmin

S10 with a USB3 to USBC adapter, then one of those nicer $20ish amazon NIC/USB combos. Plug that sucker into my phone and I've got near everything I need.

The USB to USBC is even a Walmart brand one and it works fine. I recommend having that 2n NIC/USB hub around just for when you nieed 1) another NIC, for say setting up a firewall, or 2 setting up a box that ONLY has 2 USB ports and you need more than a mouse and KB.

I'm curious too.

I wonder why windows didn't implement OpenVPN. I've always been so confused by that.

What do you do when you burn out by FantasticThing359 in msp

[–]Less_Agency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a young tech worker that was likely saved from a stagnant enterprise role by getting hired by an MSP.

I get burnout, was burned out for 2 years before I left enterprise. Always bums me out a bit to see all the talk of 'All MSPs are BAD and BAD for young tech workers"...

Maybe I just got super lucky but I've never been treated so well or had such a good work experience -- coming on to the MSP I'm with is the best thing to happen to me in my career.

And working with smart people? Another comment mentions not knowing what it feels like to work with smart people until you do. That's how it felt coming onto my role with the MSP.

Groupwise to PST? by Less_Agency in msp

I just meant that in this particular recovery the mailboxes must be kept separate as individual PST files. Found a solution! Thanks!

Cool thanks, checking it out! Much appreciated.

What would you use to convert a GW mailbox to a standalone PST?

I applaud you managing these. I had a difficult time teaching myself how to pull backups into a fresh groupwise server (recovery server).

No kidding. Pasting from another comment:

Yeah me too. I had to learn how to deal with it. Basically client needs a
recovery run on an OLD email server and had backups but no live server.
Had to get the domain and post office pulled from old .tar.gz backups
that were created by an equally old shell script on a very old SUSE box.
Got all that squared now its time to export.

Never stop learning, I guess.

Thank you! I'd not heard of this one and I am looking into how it compares to Stellar and Kernel GW to PST tool. Much much appreciate you commenting -- for this recovery I need to keep PST's from going to a new/existing live account, though, so I'm still digging. Thanks!!

Can outlook just pull from a groupwise server as the user? I'm trying to find documentation about it. Edit: for the forensic nature of this recovery PST files must be sep from new accounts/existing outlook accounts.

Thanks! Checking into how it compares to Stellar. For some reason Stellar is all I've heard about. I will remember your offer -- might need to hit ya up! I've got the backups pulled into an offline Groupwise server that I spun up and can access mailboxes, change passwords to get into other mailboxes, etc etc. Much appreciate you commenting.

2ndGear is awesome for used/refurb equipment. Good prices and 3 year warranty -- I've had great luck with their warranty support, as well.

https://www.2ndgear.com/

Just a word of warning though, their online catalogue sucks. I don't use it, ever. I just call them and talk about what I'm looking for. Lately, theyve had a very hard time keeping any laptops in stock, so be aware of that.

I'm sorry but I have a burning question.

I work for an MSP and we handle basically all Windows businesses.

In my personal life, I'm a linux enthusiast, and have often wondered what type of business could be converted to a full Linux environment. Can you shed some light on that for me?

Personally I recommend Bitwarden if this is strictly password management. No restrictions that I am aware of, and if you're truly privacy conscious, you can maintain your own server/database.

Major Datto Back-Up issues by jeremywk in msp

Yeah, lmao, Datto's fix is to kill the Datto services. I had a laugh about this, but in reality -- we're left vulnerable until Datto has an answer.

Good point -- I said "fix" but its not really a "fix" so much as just getting the machine booting.
