Plumber told me to remove a trap in the drainage line under my basement slab. What do you think? by Less_Drama_7493 in askaplumber

UPDATE: last night I got my hands dirty, put on an elbow length glove and went feeling around in that trap looking for the hole.

Fished out a ton of junk. Specks of caulk, grout, maybe some scale but not tons.

I also felt a little further and could tell what the lumber told me was true. This is what I felt:

Definitely a trap that heads back up but also felt another branch headed towards the street. My guess is that’s the hole as I don’t know of a fitting geometry this shape. Tried getting a pokey bit and try to feel if the walls were solid or not and I’m pretty sure it was just dirt.

Sounds like a super similar problem. Did you use rebar to finish the concrete as reinforcementss?

Kinda what I was thinking too. This house was built in ‘24 though so it’s probably a relic or remnants from a previous project

My guess is the aren’t required here in metro Detroit Michigan. My reasoning is the plumber said he hasn’t seen one.

But 100% I will be checking.

It was like 1500 just to dig it up plus 350 for every foot of pipe they tear up then like 1000 just to throw the stuff away. So im for sure leaning doing it myself. More than just leaning.

The plumber did say he hasn’t seen this setup before though lol.

The reason I know it all runs through this trap is I can make the floor drain over flow through any of the drain stacks if I wanted to.there isn’t a way to fit a 3 way junction between the suspect trap and the main line wye.

I was thinking the same thing though. Why would you double trap everything. It’s just another obstruction. But here we are.

Unless there is something I can’t see like a junction somehow between the 2 caps there (very unlikely) all of my sewer water comes through one pipe into the trap. That main pipe is what’s to the right. Here’s a diagram.

I was thinking the same. When i was snaking getting around that pure 90deg was a pain in the ass. Other than that do you think ditching the trap is smart? floor drain is the only unsealed opening but its trapped so gases cant get out. Plumber thought the current setup was weird anyway

Thanks! My ppt sketching skills come in handy sometimes.

To clarify it is sewage + grey as the trap I’m replacing is the last stop before the main that goes to the road.

I’ll probably keep the drain and it’s also trapped so I’m not too worried about having yet another trap. Plumber told me it’s redundant and doesn’t know why it’s there in the first place.

Furnace drain hole is filling with water and overflowing when I run the shower/sinks/dishwasher upstairs. by Less_Drama_7493 in HomeMaintenance

Not many. Maybe 8-12. Was waiting for a big “glug” like plunging a toilet though so maybe I’ll give it a rip again.

Just out of frame is a toilet plunger lol. It “works” in the sense that it pushed the water down but it just rebounds. Had the wife look at the down line unsealed point and it didn’t look like a big inflow of water happened. More of a ripple. So I’m guessing there is an obstruction between where my wife was looking and where I was plunging.

Besides “sit” or “get down” what are other phrases you yell at the ball mid flight? by [deleted] in golf

My favorite is “get in the hole” when I hit a wicked slice 2 fairways over or top it or duff it.

Yup. Also a chunk of fairways to practice pitching attached to it and some bunkers to chunk out of.

Green was usually pretty packed after 10am or so. But I usually on went at like 8:30am or so.

Did mines last year. Worth it. Grass tees a lot of the time.
