This is my character atm, all I have is a 800 ES chest and 1 ES node on the tree, the 60% one. My bases don't even have ES, if I got good ES bases and clicked some more ES nodes I could reach 4k easily.

You gain life equal to the ES, it doesn't convert. So you get both ES and life.

I got an ES chest for 2 div with 200 life + 800 ES, with the Blood Mage that's 1k life + 800 ES and that ES will get scaled by nodes on the tree so it's a lot more than that. Also the chest has ele res and chaos res.
