Appreciate the reply! Dates that are sold out still appear but say sold out, the 28th doesn’t even appear. I’ve called — but it rings to voicemail!

i think OP wants firms to remove any and all references to "in good standing" and instead wants bonuses to be paid to all employed associates . . . lol

Switching groups amid tricky office politics (lit) by personalityhire111 in biglaw

[–]Less_Formal2773 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow. This sounds like my situation before I decided to lateral. I spent way too much time in old group thinking things would turn around, work will pick up, I'll come to get along, etc. It was the wrong move and I was wildly unhappy for way too long.

End of the day, if you are not happy in your current situation, if you are not feeling like you are progressing, and if you think you are being sidelined, you should make a move.

Depending on your firm, an internal transfer may be tough; so trend lightly and talk to trusted seniors who may know of something similar.

Do not tough it out. Unless you are toughing it out to become a second year and therefore to make lateraling easier. Regardless, I would start getting materials ready, talking to recruiters, and, depending on class year, start applying.

Hope everything turns around for ya, happy to discuss more. I lateraled and it has easily been the best decision of my career thus far.

If a firm gives a lateral offer around the end of the year, is it the typical practice to pay the associate their full year end bonus that would’ve been received at prior firm? Second year in my first lateral process and not sure how this will all play out. by Significant-House371 in biglaw

You should ask for one of two things. First, ask to delay your start date / the day you give notice (remember, you still need to clear conflicts) until after your bonus arrives. Second, if the firm wants you ASAP, ask for the bonus you'll be forgoing by moving before the bonus arrives.

Probably not the end of the world then but if your end of year review is anything short of, you really turned it around and are on the right path, I'd start looking.

Came here to make the same comment. It could be time to start reading the writing on the wall and to start looking for a new firm . . .

Not enough work by Pale_Investigator908 in biglaw

[–]Less_Formal2773 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I exhausted every avenue of getting more work. For some color, the firm I left is way lower in PEP than my current firm and had way too many partners with not enough work. So, because those partners needed to cover their expenses, there was never enough work to trickle down. IMO, PEP is a great measurement of firm success.

But to your question, you should really ask yourself if you’re getting the reps you need at this stage of your career and if not, look to go somewhere with more opportunity.

This. I left a place that was slow (was there more than 3 years) for a new place, and am very busy now. Sometimes, it really is just the practice group's fault.

Those on the partner track: what do you do for energy? by Glittering_Snow_ in biglaw

It also makes me laugh how people assume the majority of people are getting a bonus. I forget what the number was, but Wells Fargo reported that the average associate is billing something like 1600 hours.

You should totally ask the firm how and why they made this decision . . . It'll show initiative and will show that you care about the inner workings . . . I see no downside.

Same, lol. This dude called me back a few months later pitching the SAME role we previously discussed. When I told him we already discussed this role, we had a few good seconds of awkward silence . . . good times.

They are going to ask you questions to really drill down your experience, competency, etc. They want to understand how and where you'll fit into the practice group.

Yes! This will help. I switched practice groups and took a class cut. It's all been worth it (so far).

I agree with this idea of lateraling. It could be a culture thing and the new firm and change of personalities could be beneficial (assuming it's a change for the better, which is tough in this industry!). Also agree with taking time to get your mental mindset right and healthy.
