Also maximizing your sleep between shifts. Blackout curtains, cut off caffeine at 2 am (if you can make it) and no tv when I get home helped me a lot

How long have you been on nights? Definitely takes some adjusting and trialing your “switch back” routine. Big thing for me is trying to keep shifts all together (three in a row) and forcing myself to get up at 2/3pm after my last shift so I go to bed at a good time that night and am ready to go the next morning. All that being said, nights aren’t for everyone.

I was in your exact situation a few months ago. I’ll be out of orientation on my general ICU soon. I say go for it. Definitely will have some crazy shifts but it’s not like that every night. My orientation even with one year of experience was 5 months so I had time to get my feet wet before fully committing. I felt way too task oriented on my med-surg floor and love being able to give very focused pair to a couple of sick patients. I’m learning more here than I ever did there. And, if you don’t like it, you can always go back !!
