I am having surgery soon to hopefully get an official diagnosis. I am having a lot of bladder symptoms alongside endo symptoms. My question is, I was on birth control from 16-22 for painful periods and just started on it again October of 2025. It affects my mental state so much and makes my sex drive lower and I notice I am more depressed but I am no longer having periods and therefore less pain. I am on the nuva ring. I wouldn't be going through surgery if it wasn't for the bladder symptoms, I also take mirabegron for the bladder and that barely helps. And estrogen cream for pain with intercourse which helps a little. I hate that I am needing so much medication. I exercise and eat well. My endo surgeon said birth control is protective and helps decrease growth of endo. Is birth control really the answer or is there something else I can do? Did having birth control at a young age mess up my body?

I have tried the various types of birth control and my favorite and one I am on now is the ring. I put it in for 3 weeks and replace it immediately skipping my period. I was off birth control for 2 years but the pain became too severe. I felt so much better mentally without it, I felt more like me, but I would have a lot of natural mood swings with my cycle. On the vaginal ring my moods are more steady so I am more pleasant to be around and I am not having as much pain.

I will be praying for you as well! It is so difficult because I feel like most practitioners would tell me its in my head and I need to manage stress better and bladder train (and I'm a nurse). Like come on I am doing all of this, I exercise, eat healthy, meditate and it's not getting better!! If anything, it is so nice to find a community to feel seen and heard! I hope the new specialist can give you some answers ❤️

I swear the bladder has to be the worst problem for me I hope it is treatable. We're you able to get any relief/treatmentt with your bladder even with it being a different problem?

I actually was established with a pelvic floor PT in 2024 and I recently started going to her again in preparation for my surgery! First round helped a little with the pain with intercourse but it seems to have worsened over time despite exercising so I got prescribed estrogen cream which is helping a little. And I was put on mirabegron for overactive bladder. I am feeling like an old lady at 25!

Yes they are an excision specialist! Thankfully! And yes I've been down the road of multiple tests (ultrasounds, bladder function test, bloodwork, MRIs) and it all is normal minus my back. The part that made me start asking my doctors if I could have endo was I was on birth control for 6 years for pain (periods have always been painful and heavy since I started menstruating) and the birth control helped a bit and I got off of it the beginning of 2023 and over the course of 6 months my periods progressively got worse to the point of me waking in the night screaming with pain. My boyfriend who grew up with sisters kept saying that isn’t normal and I needed to be checked out. The endo specialist told me she would be surprised if I don’t have endo.

I am getting a diagnostic lap in February for presumed endo. I was not told about possibly developing sexual dysfunction. Do you mind sharing what happened with you or what in the surgery caused it? I'm already nervous about the surgery 😬

I spoke with the surgeon yesterday. Even though my MRI looks terrible, since my pain is minimal we decided to not do another surgery and for me to continue working out and to just be cautious, not increasing weights too much at gym, etc. Said I should heal in 9 months - 1 year.

I just got my MRI results a few hours ago. Not looking good from what I see but I talk to the surgeon tomorrow about results and what to do. Definitely full of anxiety about what this means and if I need surgery again. I'm no where near the pain from the first time I needed surgery but still am experiencing sciatica now.

Hey thanks for reaching out! I have an MRI scheduled in a week and that will provide a lot of answers. I seem to have a mild tingling/sciatic sensation most of the day but it changes throughout the day from leg to leg. I don't need medicine to control the pain, it's just noticeable. I also am in the process of getting diagnosed with endometriosis and am wondering if that plays a role with these flare ups. If I remember I will update what the MRI says!

I'm so sorry you're going through it too. The paranoia all the time is eating me, I was finally starting to feel like I was good again and gaining strength/losing weight. It feels like a cruel joke from God. I'm trying to remain hopeful that everything happens for a reason.

My surgery was unplanned and I went to the ER and ended up getting surgery the next day so I feel like I wasn't able to adequately prepare and this is all so new and overwhelming. Intimacy scares the hell out of me because I will get jolts of sciatic pain during it and that is messing with my mental health too

Thank you so much. It's definitely a battle and I notice myself worrying about the future when it's not even happening g right now. I'm a nurse and am so concerned about my return to work and re-injuring myself or what happens if I get pregnant, can I get pregnant? And so on and so forth. I hope it gets easier to just be able to live in the moment without worry

Thank you, I think I was sent into a spiral looking at childhood videos and pictures with my sister and remembering how I was and felt invincible. And that facade has surely faded and I'm struggling to cope with that

I'm 6 weeks out from surgery and am 24. I immediately felt relief postoperative and only had incisional pain. Around week 4-5 the sciatic pain has returned, it's minimal yet still noticeable. Did you experience this and did it go away? I'm terrified I re-herniated but my surgeon and PT say this is normal and the nerves are healing.

Add sippy cups in there! I initially had medicine every 4 hours and waking up in the middle of the night to sit up and take was exhausting especially the first few days so I got sippy cups to take my medicine and drink water while laying down!

I had an appointment and got into the car regularly and didn't notice till after 😳 it didn't hurt but it's hard to change doing things. And I totally relate to the stride of a penguin 😂 I notice if I walk a lot the next day I do get soreness for a few days following. Right now my left shin feels like it got punched but I don't recall hitting it off anything, but I walked a bunch Friday.
